Launched in Hindustani music by her mother, Smt. Archana Chakravarty, Soma has groomed in Banaras tradition under Pt. Narayan Chakravarty. After completing her Sangeet Prabhakar from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Soma graduated from Banaras Hindu University and mastered in music. After her doctorate, she brought herself into the fold of Pt. Omkarnath Thakur and Bageshwari Devi tutored her and specialized her in Banaras singing thumri, tappa, hori, dadra and ghazal.

Soma is a top AIR artist and has organized many musical events. She has performed in Parampara festival in Y. B. Chavan auditorium in Mumbai a jugalbandi with Ustad Bismillah Khan and the festival was inaugurated by the then President of India, Dr. A P J. Abdul Kalam. She has also performed with artists like Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Birju Maharaj, and Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhat. She has been awarded the title Kashi Kokila by Ustad Bismillah Khan.
