The world of Indian music is rich with diverse traditions, forms and genres-from classical, semi-classical, folk and devotional, to popular and contemporary. It is uncommon to find musicians with expertise that spans several of these genres. Only well-trained and creative musicians with diverse exposure and exceptional talent, such as Shankar Mahadevan, can even dream of exploring the depths of Indian music!
One of the most popular musicians in the country today, Mahadevans innovations reflect a range of influences from the East and West. Trained in Carnatic music by T. Balamani, in Hindustani semi-classical music by Tara Devi, and Bhavgeet by Srinivas Khale, he is also a keen aficionado of Rock and Pop. Mahadevan has teamed up with several musicians, including Zakir Hussain, Sivamani, Louis Banks and Taufiq Qureshi, for performances around the world. A composer of several hit film songs (along with Ehsaan and Loy Mendonca), he has won many awards.
In Shyam Rang, Shankar Mahadevan offers a bouquet of musical forms. Scheduled two days before the festival of Janmashtami, the specially-designed concert draws from traditional as well as contemporary literature and poetry available on the Krishna theme. The compositions are remarkable for their warm and poignant devotionalism.
