Striker (A)

Striker is not a film about good versus evil. It is a story of friendship, life in the city of dreams in the 80s, a story of a game that is most common but non-existent. A story of a carrom player who grows up on the fringes of a criminal existence but does not succumb to it. Set in a Mumbai ghetto in the mid 80s and based on true life accounts, Striker is a story of triumph of human spirit over indomitable odds. Born into a poor family, Surya grows up with few luxuries. Poor health keeps him away from school often and that`s when his brother, Chandrakant, introduces him to carrom.

Striker, a gritty slice-of-life movie

By Rajeev Masand / CNN-IBN
Set in the 1980s in Malvani, a claustrophobic ghetto of suburban Mumbai, Striker, directed by Chandan Arora is a gritty slice-of-life movie that never achieves its full potential. Remarkably shot and competently performed, the film is let down by a confused script that can`t decide what point to make.

The metaphors of carrom form the backdrop of Chandan Arora`s Striker, which travels to and fro in the 70s, 80s and 90s to draw a connection between its key player of dubious morals, his murky circumstances and his quest to find a cover for his queen without succumbing to deceit.

Bored of this board

By Bryan Durham (MID DAY)
Striker plays it a little too cocky and overconfident in some scenes and way too intense in others, it is the carrom board set by the writer(s) that does this one in. By Siddharth`s own admission in several articles, this was meant to be a vehicle for him, his second well-thought-out B-Town outing. A solo project.

Striker

By Nikhat Kazmi (TOI)
Surya grows up as a skilled carrom player in the ghetto of Malvani, a Mumbai suburb which has remained free from communal tension, until December 1992. Chasing his dreams to lead a life free from crime, Surya watches his idyllic locality fall apart to the greed of local goons who are in league with corrupt cops. He fights back.
