Voice Over: Ray Romano, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Chris Wedge, Josh Peck, Jennifer Lopez, Seann William Scott
One of filmdom's most beloved trios - ''Ice Age's'' Manny, Diego, and Sid - embark upon their greatest adventure after cataclysm sets an entire continental drift. Separated from the rest of the herd, they use an iceberg as a makeshift ship, which launches them on an epic seafaring quest.
It`s hard to shake off that feeling of fatigue as you sit there in your seat watching Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, the fourth, and sadly most formulaic installment in the popular animated series. The new film reacquaints us with old favorites Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo), sabre-toothed tiger Diego (Denis Leary), and over-protective mammoth Manny (Ray Romano) who is struggling to come to terms with the fact that his now-teenage daughter isn`t Daddy`s Little Girl anymore. Theres an obligatory message here about parenting and coming-of-age, but it all feels factory-made rather than a labor of love.
If Ice Age: Continental Drift is anything to go by, love is in the air... for everybody! Peaches ( Keke Palmer) is in love with Ethan (Drake). Louis (Josh Gad) is in love with Peaches. Diego is in love with Shira ( Jennifer Lopez). You, of course, are (and will once again be) in love with the Ice Age series.
Strictly from the perspective of a child, Ice Age: Continental Drift is charming and at some places, even adorable. The cute quotient works very well and so does the humour, which is basic, easily understandable and laugh-worthy. Unlike most children`s movies, this one doesn`t have a moral lesson tucked inside, although it does tell you, the kids that is, the important values of true friendship and family. So far, so good. At the heart of the story is Manny`s separation from his biological family, his wife Ellie and daughter Peaches - and his larger, extended family of fellow animals and mammals.
There are sequels, then there are cash grabs, then there are fifty feet of direct-to-DVD spinoffs, then there is Ice Age: Continental Drift . The franchise already showed signs of being soggy in part three but now rears its fungus-coated head in its entirety in this fourquel. The quiet charm that made the first Ice Age movie a fun novelty has given way to loud over the top tomfoolery.
