Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was popularly known as Bapu- father. Truly he was the Father of the Nation. Does it then, automatically follow that his wife, Kastur Gandhi becomes Ba? Mother of the Nation? What does it mean to be the wife of the Mahatma, to be Ba? Bapu jokingly called her Jagadamba - the Universal Mother. Was she really so? Jagadamba is the story of Kasturba Gandhi. She never blindly followed Bapu, nor did she resign to her fate as the wife of the Mahatma. Most often, she resisted his experiments, his new ideas; but once she understood what they meant, understood the bigger picture behind them, she followed him wholeheartedly, devotedly even. Despite being Jagadamba, she cannot completely forget her existence as Ba of her biological children. She shares with us the tormenting moments in the lives of her two sons- Harilal and Manilal. Kastur Mohandas Gandhi shares with us some of these challenges, some turbulent moments of her life, and her awakening after the turmoil. The play traces her personal, political as well as emotional journey from Kasturba to Jagadamba.
