ABOUT NCPA
Tata Theatre (1,010 seats), inaugurated in October 1980, was conceived by the postmodernist American architect, Philip Johnson. The auditorium boasts excellent acoustics, meticulously devised by Cyril Harris, making it ideal for music, dance and drama. The spacious foyers, framing views of the sea at each end, provide superb spaces for entertaining and for holding special exhibitions.
Jamshed Bhabha Theatre (1,109 seats), inaugurated in November 1999, is equipped with modern stagecraft and engineering suitable for staging large-scale cultural events such as multimedia music and dance programmes, opera, ballet and orchestral concerts. The Indian premiere of Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly, produced by the NCPA, was staged here in 2008.
Experimental Theatre (300 seats), inaugurated in April 1986, is a 'black box' venue with modular seating and staging units. The space provides a platform for innovative production design and presentation, and promotes the exploration of new directions in performance art.
