A complex of ancient Buddhist Indian rock-cut caves, Karla caves are located at Karli near Lonavala, Maharashtra. It is about 11 km away from Lonavala. Over the period from the 2nd century to the 5th century, the shrines were developed. The oldest of the cave shrine is believed to date back to 160 BC. The group at Karla is one of the older and smaller of the many rock-cut Buddhist sites in Maharashtra. A lot of traders and Satavahana rulers made grants for construction of these caves. Karli's location in Maharashtra places it in a region that marks the division between North India and South India.

Karla caves are a magnificent structure bearing one of the grandest and the largest Chaityagrihas of all such monuments in India. The caves are beautiful with the center stupa being absolutely breathtaking. A nice huge hall at the entrance which is one of the other main attractions.

October to March are the best months to visit the Caves, Temples and inscriptions, Karla. While summers get too hot and winters too cold, the early winter months, however, stay pleasant and hence serve the best time to visit.

The Temples and inscriptions, Karla is open to people all days of the week from 6 am to 6 pm. For Indians, the entrance fee is Rs. 15 and for foreign nationalities, Rs. 200.
