Cooch Behar, a district in the Northern part of Bengal was included in the map of India in 1949 as a province, which in 1950 became a district of West Bengal. The inhabitants of this area are known as Rajbanshi, who have their own culture, a dialect which was never recognized by the State Authority. The grievance of being deprived as an ethnic group led to a regional movement, which turned into antinational militant activities.
