Having made his acting debut in the 1936 film Sathi Leelavathi, K A Thangavelu was one of the most well known Tamil comedians during the 1950s to 1985s. Sathi Leelavathi was also MGR's debut movie. After nearly quitting from the field of acting due to lack of work, Thangavelu approached actor-director N.S. Krishnan for a role. Around the time N.S. Krishnan was scouting for his directorial debut, a bilingual, Manamagal/Pelli Koothuru (1951). He offered a role to Thangavelu and thus began his journey in the industry. Over a period of time Thangavelu was called the King of comedy. His performance in the movie Kalyana Parisu (1959) gained him critical acclaim and he was soon counted as one of the great comedians.

Thangavelu acted in movies like Singari (1951), Amarakavi (1952), Thirumbi Paar (1953), Illara Jothi (1954), Panam Paduthum Paadu (1954), Vilaiyaddu Bommai (1954), Ulagam Palavitham (1955), Gomathiyin Kathalan (1955), Sella Pillai (1955), Mangaiyar Thilakam (1955), Alibabavum 40 Thirudargalum Amara Deepam (1956), Kalam Maripochchu (1956), Naga Panchami (1956), Matharkula Manikkam (1956), Alavudinum Arbutha Vilakkum (1957), Enga Veetu Mahalakshmi (1957), Sakravarthi Thirumagal (1957), Bhaktha Markandeya (1957), Maya Bazaar (1957), Uthama Puthiran (1958), Neelavukku Niranja Manasu (1958), Thaai Magalukku Kattiya Thaali (1959), Naan Sollum Rahasyam (1959), Adutha Veedu Penn (1960), Thangam Manasu Thangam (1960), Arasilankumari (1961), Enga Veetu Pillai (1965), Uyir mel aasai (1967), Galatta Kalyanam (1968), Nam Naadu (1969), Vietnam Veedu (1970), Amman Arul (1972), and Krodham (1982). Thangavelu's last movie was Manaivi Ready which released in 1986. Thangavelu passed away on 28th September, 1994.
