Omar Sy is a French actor and comedian who has the distinction of being the first actor of African descent win a French Award; he achieved the feat when he won the Cesar Award for Best Actor in 2102 for his role in The Intouchables, a French comedy-drama film directed by Oliver Nakache & Eric Tolendo. The actor who has majorly worked in French films and TV series has also been part of popular Hollywood movies like X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Jurassic World (2015), and The Angry Birds Movie (2016).

Early Life
Born in Trappes, Yvelines department, France, Omar Sy grew up in a poor family condition; His parents were both immigrants from West Africa. His mother who was of a Mauritanian descent worked as a house-cleaner and his father who came from Senegal worked in a factory. Omar Sy along with his seven siblings was raised in a low-income suburban housing project.

Personal Life
After being together for 10 years, Omar Sy married his girlfriend Helene in July 2007. The couple has two sons named Tidiane Sy and Alhadji Sy.

Movie Career
Omar Sy started his career in the film industry in 2002 with a short French film titled Granturismo where he worked as a voice artist. One year later in 2001, the actor made his acting in a feature film titled La Tour Montparnasse Infernale, French comedy film directed by Charles Nemes. The film received positive reviews and performed well at the box office, grossing more than 20 million USD. After the success of his debut feature film, the actor had a mixed year in 2002 in terms of his films being met with contrasting commercial and critical reviews. Whilst Le Beoulet, a French film directed by Alain Berberian and Frederic Forestier and Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, a French-Italian film directed by Alain Chabat emerged to be a box office hit, his other two movies of the year, Samourais and The Race (both French movies) bombed at the box office.

Omar Sy got is next major hit in 2006 as he starred in Olivier Nakache & Eric Toledano directed French film Those Happy Days. The film co-starring Marilou Berry, Jean-Paul Rouve, and Lannick Gautry emerged to be a commercial hit and Omar Sy for his brilliant performance won the NRJ Cine Awards for Most Promising Actor as well as was nominated for Raimu de la Comedie for The Best Supporting Actor. Between 2007 and 2008, Omar Sy had appeared in two films Garage Babes and Seuls two but none of the films garnered any attention.

After a disappointing year in 2007 and 2008, the actor got plenty of projects. In his first film of the year, the actor starred alongside Vincent Elbaz, Isabelle Carre, Francois-Xavier and Audrey Dana in Tellement proches, a French film written and directed by Olivier Nakache and Eric Tolenado. The film received mixed to negative reviews and emerged to be a box office flop. His next film, a French animated film titled Lascars was an adaptation of the French TV series Les Lascars. Although the film mostly received positive reviews it did not perform well at the box office. At the far end of the year, director Jean-Pierre Jeunet cast Omar Sy, Dany Boon, Yolande Moreau and Dominique Pinon in the French comedy film Micmacs. The film, which was billed as the ‘satire’ on the world arms trade premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2009 at the Roy Thomson Hall and despite receiving mostly positive reviews bombed at the box office.

The actor got a major breakthrough in his career in 2011 as he featured in The Intouchables, a French comedy-drama film, which became one of the second biggest box office hit in France of all times as well as received several award nominations. For his brilliant performance in the film, Omar Sy won the Cesar Award for Best Actor and the Lumieres Award for Best Actor. In his other film of the year, Omar Sy featured in the Jean-Paul Rouve and Isabelle Nanty starrer French comedy film Les Tuche. The film, which was based on the life of a family that suddenly gets 100 million Euros by winning a lottery but finds it difficult to adjust the lifestyle of the upper-class people in Monaco performed well at the box office.

Following a successful year in 2011, Omar Sy starred in the commercially hit French film De l’autre cote du per ish directed by David Charhon and co-starring Laurent Lafitte, Sabrina Ouazani and Lionel Abelanski. The film which released in 50 screens across USA grossed 33.5 million USD worldwide. The actor had two other releases in the same year, viz. Les Seigneurs and Mais qui a re-tue Pamela Rose but none of the films garnered any attention at the box office.

In 2012, the actor featured in Mood Indigo, a French film which was an adaptation of Boris Vian’s 1947 novel named Froth on the Daydream. The film, which also stars Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou, Gad Elmaleh and Aissa Maiga won many nominations at the 4th Magritte Awards as well as at the 39th Cesar Awards. In his second and the last film of the year titled Good People, Omar Sy made his debut in a Hollywood movie alongside James Franco, Kate Hudson, and Tom Wilkinson. The film, which focuses on the story of an American couple who fall in severe debt while renovating their family home got negative reviews from the critics but emerged to be a hit at the box office.

The actor got his next major success in 2014 as he starred in the American superhero film, X-Men: Days of the Future Past directed by Bryan Singer. The film, which was the seventh installment of the X-Men film series featured Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy in the lead roles. The film, which premiered in New York City in May 2014 received widespread critical acclaim as well as emerged to be a huge box office hit, grossing 750 million USD. His other two films of the year, Samba, and Mune: Guardian of the Moon both performed well at the box office.

Omar Sy started his campaign in 2015 with the super hit American science fiction adventure film titled Jurassic World, which was the fourth installment Jurassic Park series. The film co-starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Irrfan Khan, and Vincent D’Onofrio released in over 60 countries and it had a record-breaking opening in the first weekend; it grossed more than 500 million USD worldwide with the overall worldwide box office collection totaling to 1.6 billion USD. His other release of the year was an American drama film titled Burnt, which featured Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller in the lead roles. Although the movie got mixed reviews from critics, it grossed 36.6 million at the box office.

In 2016, Omar Sy starred in his first titular role in the French drama film titled Chocolat co-starring James Thierree, Clotilde Hesme, and Olivier Gourmet. The film, which is based on the life of two clowns did not fare well at the box office. His other release of the year includes Inferno, an American mystery thriller, which is based on a novel of the same name written by Dan Brown.
