A recipient of the National Film Award for Best First Film of a Director, filmmaker, screenwriter and lyricist Thiagarajan Kumararaja is one of the most exciting talents to emerge in Tamil cinema in recent times. He started out as a dialogue writer and lyricist, working in the comedy Oram Po (2007) and the neo-noir comedy Va (2010) early on in his career.

In 2011, Kumararaja made his directorial debut with the neo-noir gangster film Aaranya Kaandam, which starred Jackie Shroff, Ravi Krishna and Yasmin Ponnappa in central roles. Touted as the first neo-noir thriller in Kollywood, Aaranya Kaandam opened to universal critical acclaim, and went on to win accolades at the South Asian International Film Festival and the BFI London International Film Festival. Subsequently, Kumararaja served as a writer in the Ajith Kumar starrer Yennai Arindhaal (2015) and the collaborative film X: Past Is Present (2015).

In 2019, the filmmaker directed his second feature film: the thriller Super Deluxe starring Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Akkineni and Mysskin in pivotal roles.
