What’s Playing At Prithvi Theatre In April

After months of being closed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Prithvi Theatre has opened its doors. It’s time to watch dramas as they ought to be watched – in a theatre, facing the stage. Here’s the line-up for April.

‘Sir Sir Sarla’

Written and directed by Makarand Deshpande, this popular Hindi drama (pictured above) is a complex story of the love and admiration that university students Sarla (Aahana Kumra) and Phanidhar (Sanjay Dadhich) feel for their teacher, Professor Palekar (Deshpande).

When: Friday, April 2 at 2pm and 5pm.

‘Mahanirvan’

Satish Alekar’s Marathi dark comedy Mahanirvan is a musical satire on Indian funeral rituals. This play, which first opened in 1974, has been adapted and performed in various languages and employs Maharashtrian folklore and music styles such as kirtan, gondhal, bhajan and abhang.

‘Dekh Behen’

Directed by Prerna Chawla and Shikha Talsania, Dekh Behen, performed in Hindi and English, is a story about a group of women at their friend’s wedding. They show up to celebrate – and to gossip – for they all hate the bride.

‘Salaam Noni Appa’

This English romance-comedy is an adaptation of the eponymous short story from actor-writer Twinkle Khanna’s book The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad. It follows two sisters, Noni (Lillete Dubey) and Binny (Jayati Bhatia) who are nearing their twilight years. Happy in their comfortable cocoon, Noni finds herself fielding an unexpected curveball when she falls in love with her yoga instructor (Yatin Karyekar).

When: Thursday, April 15 at 5.30pm and Friday, April 16 at 6pm and 8pm.
