Amar Akbar Anthony: Film Review – A Revenge Saga

Verdict: Srinu Vaitla strikes back with a vengeance.

Touted to be an action-comedy entertainer, Amar Akbar Anthony amalgamates Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja, Ileana, and Srinu Vaitla for the fourth time. It was Ravi Teja who has launched Srinu Vaitla as a director with Nee Kosam and they later worked for Venky and Dubai Seenu. After a brief hiatus, Ileana is back in Tollywood. Amar Akbar Anthony is poised to revive their success streak.

What’s Amar Akbar Anthony About:

In 2003, two Indian families from New York City are killed by their business partners. Amar (Ravi Teja) and Aishwarya (Ileana) are the only survivors who attempt to avenge this heinous atrocity. However, both have a dissociative identity disorder. Whether they’re able to overcome their identity disorder and accomplish their revenge forms the rest of Amar Akbar Anthony.

What Works:

Amar Akbar Anthony grips the viewers from the start till the very end. Srinu Vaitla paces the thriller with skill. The direction and screenplay leave the audience with no choice but to get hooked. Ravi Teja stands out and has once again proven his mettle. Ileana has delivered her act to perfection. The chemistry between the lead pair is refreshing like never before. It is nice to see Sunil in his elements. Though he makes a late entry in the second half, he hits it right on the target. Venella Kishore does a great job in the role he has been given. Comedian Satya as Jr. Paul delivers a hilarious act and steals every scene that he’s part of. The well-crafted dialogues add to the hilarity of the situations. The rest of the huge ensemble of the cast does what is best for the movie. Thaman is in top form and the music only adds to the narrative. Venkat C Dilip’s visuals stay with you right through, enhancing your viewing experience. The production values from Mythri Movie Makers are top-notch. The whole movie is shot across the United States and every frame looks appealing. The art direction is good.

What Could Have Been Better:

The film slows down at times and seems like it’s heading nowhere. While it doesn’t necessarily spoil the mood the movie, one couldn’t help wondering if it could’ve been crisper.

Why You Should Watch:

Amar Akbar Anthony is a rattling entertaining thriller that grabs your attention from the start and puts you through the wringer. This one is a welcome comeback of sorts for Srinu Vytla, Ravi Teja and Ileana. You can catch this over the weekend.
