The latest genre to grip Bollywood is black comedy. It worked with Newton in 2016 and hit an all-time high with Andhadhun last year. The latest black comedy film that is set to impress audiences is Bombairiya. Directed by debutante Pia Sukanya, it follows the story of a film PR agent Meghna, who gets embroiled in a series of events after her phone gets stolen. The titular character is portrayed by Radhika Apte who has had a whirlwind year in Bollywood and television. This will be her first film of 2019 in which the actress plays a characteristic city girl.
Besides Radhika Apte, there are various other actors who play important parts in Bombairiya. Think Kaalakaandi – also an early release of last year – where the storyline involved too many characters, all tied to each other. Bombairiya seems to run on similar lines. On one hand, there’s Meghna who hates her job and a biker (Siddhant Kapoor) who steals her phone one hot December morning. Abhishek (Akshay Oberoi) comes to her rescue but gets trapped within the web of secrecy that lies beneath it all. On the other hand, there’s Pandya (Adil Hussain) who is a politician facing trial in the High Court while his hitman attempts to kill the witness to his case and Deputy Home Minister Irawati (Shilpa Shukla) who also has a big part to play in the running of this game. The whole mess leads back to Meghna’s phone, which holds a suspicious video that will lead her to lose her job and ruin her client Karan Kapoor’s (Ravi Kishan) already-fading career. Not to mention, there are lives at stake here. Meanwhile, CID Gujral (Amit Sial) is trying to solve the mess but gets embroiled in it himself. Sounds complicated, right? Watch the Bombairiya trailer below and see if all your doubts are cleared.
Bombairiya is all set to hit theatres on the 11th of January alongside URI: The Surgical Strike. It is the first Bollywood comedy of the year and is sure to be a hit among the masses of “Bombai”. The name of the film is a take on the temperamental state of Mumbai and its people so we’re sure that if you belong here or in any other city, you’re going to relate to the madness. Otherwise, you can simply watch Bombairiya for some light comedy and high energy. Stay tuned for more updates on the film as well as our review.
