Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel: Film Review – A Thorough Entertainer

Verdict: The crime-thriller is packed with all the right elements.

After a hiatus, Dileep comes back with a bang in Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel. Written and directed by B. Unnikrishnan, the movie has a seasoned cast who have many strengths to their credit. Apart from the actor, the movie also stars Mamta Mohandas, Priya Anand, Siddique, Aju Varghese, Ganesh Kumar, Saiju Kurup, and Harish Uthaman in pivotal roles. Gopi Sundar and Rahul Raj have scored the music for Hari Narayanan’s lines.

What’s Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel About:

Balakrishnan (Dileep) is a struggling lawyer. His severe stutter has turned him into a joke among colleagues and family. A case brought by his brother-in-law (Suraj Venjaramoodu) lands him and his ‘client’ Anuradha Sudarshan (Mamta Mohandas) in a soup. Now it is all up to Balan vakeel to untangle the web of lies and crimes to solve the mystery and clear his name.

What Works:

Unlike Unnikrishnan’s usual heroes, Balan Vakeel is restrained and almost like a bumbling idiot in the first half of the movie. But in the second, he turns into a fighting machine with wits to match his fists. The second half of the movie is racy and has all the twists needed for a thriller. Dileep does a commendable job in the flick, which lands safely in his comfort zone. Mamta Mohandas has done justice to her part and Aju Varghese plays the quintessential sidekick who provides the comic relief. Suraj Venjaramoodu is in his usual element as the scheming relative who gets everybody into trouble. But it is Siddique who has put up a stellar performance as Balan’s father. In his movies of late, he has been doing diverse roles and earning brownie points for his acting prowess. Another good performance comes from Harish Uthaman as the uber-suave anti-hero. The actor has proved his mettle with his portrayal of Ronald.

What Could’ve Been Better:

Bheeman Raghu plays Babu Chettan, a local goofy goon, who could have been crafted better. For an actor of his stature, the role could have done with some polishing. The pretty out-of-place item number and some cliched dialogues could have been done away with too.

Why You Should Watch:

This is one of those movies that has all the right ingredients for a good crime thriller. Dileep has done a good job on his return. Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel is surely one for the family outings.
