Rio 2: Film Review

Blu and Jewel are back. But not alone this time. Three clamorous chicks – Bia, Carla and Tiago, their children accompany them in the sequel Rio 2. It is a brilliant, colorful yet crammed 3-D animated movie with euphoric music set against a story of family reunion and environmental predicaments.

Rio 2 picks up from where the first movie left-off. The sequel opens with a jubilant New Year’s Eve celebration with music, dance and party in the streets of Rio de Janerio. But most of the action in the film takes place in the rainforests of Amazon.

Blu, Jewel, and their three chicks are living happily in the bird sanctuary set up for them by their human friends Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro) and Linda (Leslie Mann). Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), raised in Linda’s home, enjoys leading a human-like life. While Jewel (Anne Hathaway), bred in the wild, wants to show the little ones the beauty of the world she came from. Soon they come to know of more blue macaws living in the Amazon rainforests. Jewel persuades Blu to help their human friends find the flock. Reluctantly Blu agrees, loads his fanny pack, picks his GPS and the family along with friends Pedro (Will.I.Am), Nico (Jamie Foxx) and Rafael (George Lopez) head on an adventurous journey.

Director Carlos Saldanha and writer Don Rhymer come together to pen the story of Rio 2. In the effort to keep the storyline simple and straight, they end up wiping out the original plot amidst several sub plots. Firstly, Jewel has changed her minds to stay in amazon permanently as she discovers the blue macaw flock is none other than her father, Eduardo (Andy Garcia) and her community, who were long lost. Secondly, Tulio and Linda come across a group of illegal loggers destroying the Amazon forests. Eco issue, needs quick action! Thirdly, Blu’s old rival – Nigel (Jemaine Clement). He is on a pursuit to seek revenge with the help of neon pink and purple poisonous frog, Gabi (Kirstin Chenoweth). And last but not the least, Blu feels the pressure of competition from Jewel’s childhood friend, Roberto (Bruno Mars). There’s also border issues between the red and blue macaws as food supply is diminishing at a fast pace.

There’s so much happening, simultaneously, that at times you find it difficult to keep up. To make up for the eventful plot, there’s plenty of lively music throughout by artists like Bruno Mars. The Technically the animation aspect including the 3-D element is top-notch.

Jesse as domesticated Blu and Anne as raised-in-the-wild Jewel offer a brilliant work as the respective characters. Artist like Jermaine Clement, Bruno Mars and  Andy Garcia have nailed the voice works for all the supporting characters.

Though Rio 2 is chock-full with many birds, animals and subplot, yet it makes for a pleasing animated sequel.

Why should you watch this film?

Did you enjoy Blu, Jewel, Pedro, Nico, Rafael and Nigel’s adventures in 2011 movie, Rio? Then you’ll definitely enjoy the more colorful, vibrant sequel – Rio 2. Also if you and your child are huge animation movie fans, Rio 2 makes the best family movie experience.
