We Have Proof Why Soorarai Pottru’s Maara Is Oscar-worthy #SooraraiPottruJoinsOSCARS

Suriya blockbuster Soorarai Pottru directed by Sudha Kongara dropped on Amazon Prime and the world has changed slightly. In its short time online, the film has garnered a huge amount of appreciation and praise for its inspirational true story of a pioneer who dared to dream big for himself and for his nation. Based on the events in the life of visionary entrepreneur Captain G R Gopinath who founded Deccan Air, Soorarai Pottru follows the immense struggles and hurdles that the protagonist had to endure in finally making his dream a reality. Sudha Kongara uses incidents and anecdotes from Captain Gopinath’s own book titled Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey to recreate the world of Nedumaran Rajangam aka Maara, played by Suriya in the film. Now that the film is in the running for the 93rd Oscars to be held in 2021, let’s dig into why we think it deserves the prestigious award.

A small-town rebel with a cause

Maara hails from a small town that is cut off from the rest of the country in every aspect including basic facilities like water, electricity and transport. While his father is a traditional crusader for his people, Maara has a rebellious streak that pushes him to question the hypocrisy and red-tapism that exists in the nation’s political milieu. This causes him to aggressively sound the bell on causes that affect the underprivileged sections of society in hopes of creating a better future for them. A rebel with a larger-than-life persona, therefore, is definitely a source of inspiration, and Captain Gopinath, who also hailed from humble roots embodied this spirit in entirety.

A never say die attitude is the key to leadership

Leaders are made of stern stuff and one of their biggest reasons for success is their positive attitude especially in times of extreme adversity. In Soorarai Pottru, Suriya’s Maara faces stumbling blocks for every step forward he makes and is constantly in the firing line of vicious competitors, financial constraints and the fear of failure. Yet, he rises up, always trusting his instincts and intuition to finally soar high to achieve his goal. This aspect of the character was brilliantly depicted by Suriya and is illustrative of Captain Gopinath’s steely resolve which is evident in his autobiography.

The people are paramount in any dream

An inspirational personality not only develops on intelligent ideas but is also someone who works to better the society, country, or community through the application of those thoughts. Maara had his eureka moment in providing low-cost air travel that was borne out of a tragic incident in his life which got him to think about how he could help people who desperately needed to be aided. His selflessness and genuine desire to create an equal world of opportunity prompted him to embark on this challenging journey. That’s inspiration right here.
