Vaanam Kottattum: Film Review – An Adorable Family Drama

Verdict: With an endearing script and well-cut visuals, Vaanam Kottattum is a great watch.

Directed by Dhana Sekaran, Vaanam Kottattum is an adorable family drama that features an ensemble cast of Sarathkumar, Raadhika Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Aishwarya Rajesh, Shantanu Bhagyaraj, Madonna Sebastian, Balaji Sakthivel, Amitash, and Nandha. The movie is co-written by Dhana Sekaran and Mani Ratnam, with the latter also producing it under the banner ‘Madras Talkies’. Sid Sriram debuts as music composer through this film while Preetha Jayaraman’s cinematography and Sangathamizhan E’s editing are other highlights.

What’s Vaanam Kottattum About:

A family rivalry leads Bose (Sarathkumar) to kill a man who attacked his brother (Balaji Sakthivel). A remorseless Bose is imprisoned, while his wife Chandra (Raadhika Sarathkumar) who doesn’t want to witness further violence around her, leaves for Chennai with their kids to seek a new life. She finds a job in a printing press and works hard to make ends meet. Years pass by. Their son Selva (Vikram Prabhu) is now a taxi driver and daughter Mangai (Aishwarya Rajesh) is studying law. They jointly start a small scale business and when things start to get better for them, Bose is released and joins his family in Chennai. Meanwhile, the murdered man’s son Bhaskaran (Nandha) comes to Chennai to seek revenge for his father’s death.

What Works:

The makers have succeeded in bringing an ensemble cast who are nearly perfect in their respective roles – watching Sarathkumar perform on the silver screen after so long is a treat to one’s eyes. His chemistry with his real-life partner Raadhika Sarathkumar, who also delivers a tremendous performance, is endearing to watch. Vikram Prabhu and Aishwarya Rajesh are perfect in their roles too. Sid Sriram’s songs are a treat. Balaji Sakthivel is surprisingly amazing in his role. The backdrop of rain has been used wisely throughout the movie, matching well with the title. Dhana Sekaran has retained a Mani Ratnam touch in Vaanam Kottattum.

What Could’ve Been Better:

The plot seems familiar and old-fashioned, although its treatment is different. There are various subplots – the one between Vikram and Madonna, the love triangle between Aishwarya, Shantanu and Amitash, the revenge story – but none have a strong foundation. Shantanu is under-utilized. The writers could have perhaps focused on the family more than creating subplots that don’t contribute much to the movie.

Why You Should Watch:

Vaanam Kottattum is a beautiful family story you wouldn’t want to miss. It has good performances, a decent storyline and a feel-good ending.

1. Did you know that the original choice for the title role was not Deepika Padukone? It was Parineeti Chopra. Shoojit went to Parineeti to play the Big B’s beleaguered daughter in Piku. But PC Jr argued she was already doing a father-daughter film Daawat-e-Ishq. Director Shoojir Sircar shrugged and rang Deepika’s doorbell. As luck would have it, Daawat-e-Ishq bombed. Piku was a cult success. Daane-daane pe likha hota hai khane wale ka naam. Same goes for roles.

Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali reinitiate talks for Izhaar; Shah Rukh to play a man who cycles to Norway for love

Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali created magic on screen almost two decades ago with Devdas. But ever since, they have never worked together in a film. But sources say they were very close to reuniting on screen on several films. SLB had offered SRK both Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat but talks fell through. In fact, there were also rumours that the director wanted to cast Salman Khan and Shah Rukh together in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam 2. That also never materialised. Then, there was the Sahir Ludhianvi biopic that SLB was producing. So there have been a few misses for the actor-director duo.

BREAKING: Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai makers voluntarily make 21 cuts and modifications after getting censor certificate

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had always been seen as a spoilsport. Many viewers have cried foul since years over CBFC’s idea of chopping off ‘objectionable’ scenes and thereby compromising on the freedom of expression of the makers. This perception of CBFC got a boost under the chairmanship of Pahlaj Nihalani. Though he vacated the post in 2017, the perception remains.
