Bollywood has two types of fans – those who watch Anurag Kashyap‘s movies and those who watch Anil Kapoor movies. While to each their own, Vikramaditya Motwane‘s latest film panders to both fan bases. The famous actor and infamous filmmaker have come together for a semi-reality action thriller, where they play themselves. In a way, AK vs AK – while being portrayed as a tussle between the two stars – pays homage to its actors and their legacies. Its innovative plot begins with a kerfuffle between the stars at a public event, which results in Anurag Kashyap throwing a glass of water at Anil Kapoor. His outburst is met with deep criticism from the industry, followed by ostracization from his closest friends. This sets the wheels turning in the already troubled mind of the filmmaker. He decides to make his next big blockbuster with Anil Kapoor and create a plot that the star just cannot refuse!
Entertainment for all
AK vs AK, from its trailer, seems to have a bizarre plot. Nonetheless, the film manages to entertain throughout its duration of 2 hours. As Anil Kapoor sets out in the search of his daughter, the camera follows him all the way to different parts of the city, recording his interactions with various types of people – from the police to his family to a mob of fans. There’s a lot going on that keeps you glued and even when the plot starts to lose steam, you will not be bored.
A “Motwane” touch
Vikramaditya Motwane rarely fails to impress. He is famous for making actors out of “stars”, be it Sonakshi Sinha in Lootera or Harshvardhan Kapoor in Bhavesh Joshi. Anil Kapoor is known for many great performances and is certainly a director’s actor. He performs brilliantly under Motwane’s touch and delivers a great act that defines his Bollywood portfolio. Even Anurag Kashyap, who’s certainly not known for his acting chops, is quite impressive in a character that complements his diabolical real self.
Star-studded affair
Fans of Bollywood also get a peek into the lives (and houses) of the famous celebrities featured in the film. There are various cameos, mostly by the Kapoors, which includes Anil’s children Sonam Kapoor and Harshvardhan Kapoor, his brother Boney Kapoor, and even film critic Suchitra Tyagi. We are also taken into the sets of a film, with a detailed tour inside Anil Kapoor’s vanity van. So if you miss doing the tours of film city due to the lockdown, now get the filmy dose from AK vs AK.
