The World’s Best-Selling Manga Is Getting A Live Action Netflix Adaptation

Netflix’s live action adaptation of the highly successful manga series One Piece is officially back in development after a long delay.

Created by Eiichiro Oda, the long-running manga began in 1997. It has since expanded into a media empire of movies, video games and an anime that is one of the most well-loved in the genre. One Piece follows a boy named Monkey D. Luffy who eats a magic fruit that turns his body into rubber. He then sets off on a journey to find the mysterious One Piece treasure, which will fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming king of the pirates.

To say that the series is popular would be a massive understatement. This Japanese comic series about a rubber pirate boy has sold approximately 480 million copies. That’s only 4 million short of the entire lifetime sales of the Batman comics.

In January of 2020, Netflix announced a live action One Piece series with Oda working with showrunner Steven Maeda. However, there were no significant updates beyond that due to the coronavirus pandemic. Maeda recently took to Instagram to confirm he’s back to work on the series.

Considering the show was announced early last year, we will likely see it come to fruition some time in 2022.
