‘WandaVision’ Flashbacks Reveal One Huge Missed Opportunity

As WandaVision brings Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) to the forefront of the MCU, the show also brings to light how the Marvel Cinematic hasn’t resolved Wanda’s ties to Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). Wanda and her twin brother Pietro lost their both parents to a Stark Industries missile in their war-torn native Sokovia. Although Tony was unaware of it at the time, in the MCU the past trauma of Wanda and Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is inextricably linked to Tony Stark and his past profiteering as the head of Stark Industries and their weapons research, development and manufacturing.

By 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony Stark had been known to the world as Iron Man for many years. One of the major reasons Tony donned the Iron Man suit was to rid the world of his own company, Stark Industries’ weapons. Meanwhile, the Maximoff twins, who were orphaned at the age of ten, were  radicalized and became Hydra agents. The twins were experimented on with the Mind Stone and gained super powers. They were turned into weapons to be used against the Avengers. Wanda’s whole life is collateral damage of Stark Industries business practices. However, Wanda was never given the opportunity to confront Tony about their intertwined pasts. This lack of closure becomes more painfully evident in WandaVision episode eight’s flashback to the night Wanda and Pietro’s parents died. With Tony dead in Avengers: Endgame, there’s very little scope for Wanda to have a direct confrontation with the man. The two have amazingly had only one scene together in the MCU movies. Perhaps Marvel will address this in alternate universe storylines, but we can only hope.
