Gursimran Khamba’s ‘Lemons And Peaches’ Is A Rant Riot

We caught a show of Lemons And Peaches, the first ever stand-up special by Gursimran Khamba, at The Habitat. Khamba delivered an energetic performance in which he ranted about everything from liberals and marriage to the hazards of being recognised in public. Here’s what you can expect from his show.

He’s a lefty

Khamba is a staunch liberal. He talks about being a student at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), and the “collective liberal meltdown” that took place there when the BJP won the Lok Sabha elections last year. He has opinions on what liberals in this country are doing wrong, and what they should learn from the right wing.

He was a protester once

In light of the recent student protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), Khamba reminisces about the time he was a student at Delhi University. Back then he’d orchestrated a student protest that didn’t quite go as planned. The comedy of errors that ensued resulted in him visiting Rashtrapati Bhavan to meet the then President APJ Abdul Kalam, who asked him an “existential question”.

Fame comes at a cost

Khamba enjoys being famous…mostly. Of course, he has to deal with the trials of being recognised in public places and the awkward situations this sometimes puts him in. He  narrates a hilarious account of the time he picked up a testicular injury while in Dubai for a show, and explains why that was the last show he ever did there.

On having divorced folks

Khamba’s parents divorced when he was a kid. He talks about the reasons for their divorce, and tells us how he was anxious about his parents meeting after 19 years at his wedding. Their split is the reason he never goes to the movies with his mum anymore.

He recently got hitched

Naturally he had to joke about it. He talks about fights, in-laws and why he didn’t want his wife to take his last name. He also indulges us in a hilarious incident from his honeymoon in Amsterdam, and tells us what we should learn from Pakistan when it comes to getting married.
