Zeenat Aman Returns To The Stage At The Great Indian Theatre Festival

The first edition of The Great Indian Theatre Festival, a travelling drama fest, will kick off on Friday, February 21. Over 45 plays by major theatre directors and actors will be staged in more than 25 cities across India. Here’s the current line-up.

‘Dearest Bapu, Love Kasturba’

Zeenat Aman returns to the stage after 15 years in the role of Kasturba Gandhi in Saif Hyder Hasan’s English play, which hinges on the relationship between the Mahatma and his wife. Veteran TV actor Arif Zakaria plays Gandhi.

When: Friday, February 21 at 8pm; Saturday, February 22 at 5pm & 8pm; Sunday, February 23 at 4pm & 7pm and Saturday, 21 March at 5pm&8pm.
Where: Tata Theatre: NCPA, Nariman Point, Mumbai; Sirifort Auditorium, Gautam Nagar, Delhi; Shilpakala Vedika, Jubilee Enclave, Hyderabad and The Music Academy, Gopalpuram, Chennai.

‘Hamlet The Clown Prince’

A group of gibberish-speaking clowns stage a production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in writer-director Rajat Kapoor’s gloriously funny Hamlet The Clown Prince (pictured above) starring Vinay Pathak.

When: Saturday, February 22 at 8pm and Sunday, March 22 at 7pm.
Where: Shilpakala Vedika, Jubilee Enclave, Hyderabad and Sir Muttha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall, Chetpet, Chennai.

‘Macbeth: What Is Done Is Done’

Rajat Kapoor’s latest in a series of plays on clowns doing Shakespeare features Macbeth. A bunch of clowns decided to stage the tragedy in their lingo of English and gibberish. Well-known actors Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Shorey play important roles.

When: Saturday, February 22 at 5pm and Sunday, March 22 at 4pm.
Where: Shilpakala Vedika, Jubilee Enclave, Hyderabad and Sir Muttha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall, Chetpet, Chennai.

‘An Evening with Krishna’

The philosophy of Krishna will be explained by writer Kaajal Oza Vaidya in Gujarati and illustrated in Gujarati folk music and bhajans.

When: Saturday, March 7 at 4.30pm and 7.30pm.
Where: Birla Matoshree Sabhagriha, New Marine Lines, Mumbai.

‘Dekh Behen’

Directed by Prerna Chawla and Shikha Talsania, Dekh Behen, performed in Hindi and English, is a story about a group of women at their friend’s wedding. They show up to celebrate – and to gossip – for they all hate the bride.

When: Sunday, March 8 at 4pm.
Where: Royal Opera Theatre House, Opera House, Mama Parmanand Marg.

‘Hello Zindagi’

Directed by Raman Kumar, this Hindi play is a story of five women from different backgrounds who share one flat and deal with all the drama that their respective lives dole out. Starring Minissha Lamba, Kishwar Merchant, Delnaaz Irani and Chitrashi Rawat, the characters range from an ex film actress to a business manager to a domestic abuse victim.

When: Sunday, March 8 at 7pm.
Where: Birla Matoshree Sabhagriha, New Marine Lines, Mumbai.
