In actor-singer-writer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi’s 2013 book, Drama Queen, Krishnamoorthi takes readers on a roller coaster ride into her life as a single mother frantically searching for a happily ever after. En route, we meet her loud-mouthed gal pals, horny dogs, a long list of unsuitable men, her primly disapproving, traditional South Indian family, and her refreshingly nonchalant attitude towards them all.
Why are we talking about a memoir that was released seven years ago? Because Krishnamoorthi, who’s best remembered for playing Shah Rukh Khan’s love interest in the 1994 film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, has adapted it into an English musical. While Krishnamoorthi is the only actor on stage, several people such as filmmakers Nagesh Kukunoor and Ken Ghosh, actors Suchitra Pillai and Sujata Kumar have lent their voices to the play. Krishnamoorthi’s daughter Kaveri has even sung for it.
Watch Krishnamoorthi get candid on stage as she leaves no opportunity to take potshots not only at herself but also at men and society in general. This single mother is telling it like it is.
