5 Upcoming Plays In Mumbai Worth Marking In Your Culture Calendar

‘The Father’

Naseeruddin Shah directs and acts in Florian Zeller’s drama (translated into English by Christopher Hampton) which gazes into the mind of an ageing man suffering dementia (pictured above).
When: Tuesday, September 18 to Sunday, September 30 at 7 pm.
Where: Experimental Theatre, NCPA, Nariman Point.

‘Qissa Urdu Ki Aakhri Kitaab Ka’

Written and directed by Danish Husain, who also acts in the satirical storytelling performance, ‘Qissa Urdu Ki Aakhri Kitaab Ka’, is based on the eponymous book by Pakistani essayist and Urdu poet Ibn-e-Insha.
When: Tuesday, September 25 and Wednesday, September 26 at 6 pm and 9 pm.
Where: Prithvi Theatre, Janki Kutir, Juhu Church Road, Juhu.

‘Guards at the Taj’

It’s 1648. Two men (played by Joy Fernandes and Vrajesh Hirjee) guarding the newly built Taj Mahal see the monument for the first time in the light of sunrise. They’re full of wonder. But their joy is shortlived as they’re asked to perform a gruesome task. Danish Husain has directed this English drama written by Indian-American playwright Rajiv Joseph.
When: Thursday, September 27 and Friday, September 28 at 9 pm.
Where: Prithvi Theatre, Janki Kutir, Juhu Church Road, Juhu.

‘Jab Khuli Kitaab’

The third Aadyam play to premiere this season is ‘Jab Khuli Kitaab’, a Hindi drama written and directed by and starring Saurabh Shukla. He plays Gopal, who learns that his ailing wife had had an affair decades ago. His first impulse is to file for divorce. Gradually, the two work things out.
When: Saturday, September 29 at 7.30 pm and Sunday, September 30 at 4 pm and 7.30 pm.
Where: Royal Opera House, Mama Parmanand Marg.

‘#SingIndiaSing’

Aadyam’s fourth play this season is the English musical ‘#SingIndiaSing’ directed by Nadir Khan. Rahul da Cunha and Bugs Bhargava Krishna have written the story and lyrics and Clinton Cerejo has a composed a score combining rock, hip hop, soul and item numbers. In the play, which is a comment on the competitiveness of talent contests, four singers from diverse backgrounds fight for the top prize.
When: Friday, October 12 to Sunday, October 14 at 7.30 pm.
Where: Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA, Nariman Point.
