Throwback Thursday: Trends Retro Actresses Gave Us

The on-screen persona of actors and actresses have always been an inspiration with regard to fashion. From Wide-legged flared trousers to Bohemian prints and sophisticated bow ties and an array of retro elements, the 60’s and 70’s are considered as one of the most fashionable eras of Bollywood. The time introduced some of the most unique wardrobe styles that continue to influence the fashion forward crowd today. The fashion brands now, launch collections based on the trends showcased in the movies. Lets go back in time to look at some actresses who have given us really trendy fashion goals.

The Sadhana Cut

For the longest time, the bangs and the fringes had another name – the Sadhana cut. You must have heard at least once. If you haven’t, it’s time to have the talk with your parents.

Polka Dotted Bobby by Dimple Kapadia

The polka-dot, knotted top and black mini skirt from Bobby has been one of the most recognized movie outfits in the history of…well…movie outfits. Dimple Kapadia carried it off with grace and today it fits in well with the trends even today.

Madhubala’s Anarkali
Known for her sublime beauty, Madhubala is an inspiration to many women and actresses, then and now. She was the one who gave us the Anarkali, which is a rage among the fashion industry today.

The flowy bell-bottomed pants – Shabana Azmi & Neetu Singh
Bell-bottomed pants, popularly known as bell bottoms, were one of the most popular retro styles. They were not just worn by the actors. The actresses rocked this style as well. Popular heroines like Shabana Azmi and Neetu Singh flaunted their colorful and printed oversized bell bottom pants in Parvarish and other movies from the 1970s and 1980s.

Dual Winged Eye-liner – Sharmila Tagore

While we are still trying to learn the dual-winged eyeliner from the make-up tutorials on YouTube, Sharmila Tagore had perfected it and made it sexy way back it in the 60s-70s. This actress had used this look in almost all her movies and we know she inspired us. She also was the actress who popularised the bauffants, which we call puffs now.

The Mid-Riff Saree – Mumtaz

Remember watching the song Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche? If you haven’t, we have it right here. Her midriff (and navel) could’ve looked easily looked vulgar. But not Mumtaz! Being a very health conscious and a fit actress, she had a svelte body and pulled off the look very gracefully.

Hope you enjoyed the walk through the retro fashion trends. Share your thoughts with us in the comments and share the memories with your friends.
