5 Films Every Physics Student Must Watch

Happy Monday, people! This is the sixth in a series of weekly articles for students. The series features articles recommending the best films based on a particular academic subject. It is incredible how much more fun academics get when blended with entertainment and the following list will prove it. In the previous edition, we got a little serious and took the law into our own hands, with a list of films every law student must watch.

This week, it's time to put our lab coats on. Remember the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy? Yup, we're talking about physics. Every sci-fi film that you know of is based on physics, naturally. So here's a list of films that will bring out the Einstein in you. You may be surprised that there is not a single space movie in this list. Not to worry, next week we'll be featuring a list of top space movies, or films that every astronomy student must watch.

Particle Fever (2013)
This documentary is about scientists re-creating conditions from the big-bang theory to investigate the origin of all matter and unravel the mysteries of the universe.

The Theory of Everything (2014)
Starring Eddie Redmayne, this film is based on the life of one of the greatest physicians of all time – Stephen Hawking.

Einstein and Eddington (2008)
This is the story of Einstein's general theory of relativity, his relationship with Eddington and the introduction of this theory to the world, against the backdrop of the Great War.

Infinity (1996)
Starring Matthew Broderick, this biographical drama film is about the early life of physicist Richard Feynman.

The Abyss (1989)
James Cameron
has done a great job in directing this film, by keeping it sci-fi, yet scientifically accurate. This one goes way too deep into the sea.
