5 Happy Endings In Movies That Fooled You

What if the wish for happy endings, which are the goals of our actions, are actually mere illusions. Someone’s happy ending is bound to be someone’s sad ending. At the end of the day, it is not possible that everyone goes home happy. No one explains this better than Oscar Wilde when he said “The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what fiction means.”  We have supported our favorite characters as they battle through the odds and win at the end of the day and everyone goes home happy. But is that really the case? Here are some movies where you thought the ending was happy but it actually wasn’t.

Avatar (2009)

Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) saved the residents of Pandora from the big bad humans with their machines and lived happily ever after. But what about humanity? The humans were on the planet in search of unobtanium, which was critical for the survival on Earth at that time. The residents of Pandora were saved, the humans were not. Although, that explains why Jake didn’t hesitate before giving up on his human self.

(500) Days of Summer (2009)

Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) learns his lesson and is reformed after 500 days until he bumps into Autumn and you see the clock resetting. Although this time things can turn out differently, it can also go the same way until he meets Winter at the end of his 500 days with Autumn.

Inception (2010)

Although not exactly a happy ending, we have obsessed over the spinning top, the spectacular effects and the complex story, we forget one vital piece of information. Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) brought down an empire that was someone’s hard work with no moral motivation whatsoever. While he might have finally come home, it was the day that the bad guys won.

Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)

We saw the cute yet deadly Ewoks stealing our hearts. Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) finally are together and Anakin Skywalker almost redeemed himself. As they say – you might win the battle but not the war. The war against the empire was far from over and the entire galaxy far far away was still under the rule of evil and if the current series has to be believed, the emperor is still at large.

Watchmen (2009)

Although Rorschach‘s (Jackie Earle Haley) journal after his death reveals the conspiracy to end the Cold War, it would have been better if the conspiracy had not been revealed since it united two superpowers against a common foe and ended the Cold War.
