5 Best Female-Led Action Films & 5 You Need To Look Out For

While action films have traditionally featured macho male heroes, it’s no longer true for all action films. There have been many great female-led action movies made by Hollywood in the past few years and in 2020, some of the year’s biggest releases are action films with women in the lead cast. Here are some of the best female-led action films and the ones you need to watch out for:

Kill Bill (2003)

Uma Thurman‘s The Bride is one of the most memorable characters from all action films. Her revenge-seeking saga with this film and its sequel make up some of Quentin Tarantino‘s best work.

Hanna (2011)

Before getting the attention of Oscars with Lady Bird in 2017, Saoirse Ronan played a teenager who had been trained by her father to become an assassin in this praise-worthy action film.

The Hunger Games (2012)

Based on Suzanne Collins‘ best-selling trilogy, The Hunger Games brought Jennifer Lawrence into the limelight. This dystopian action film was immensely popular and had three more sequels released in the next three years.

Wonder Woman (2017)

The first female superhero film from DC proved itself to be better than most of the films released before it. Gal Gadot was perfect for the role of Wonder Woman and a sequel was soon green-lit.

Atomic Blonde (2017)

Charlize Theron showed that she was great in action films with Mad Max: Fury Road and with Atomic Blonde, she got to lead a stylish action-thriller as an MI6 agent.

The Rhythm Section (2020)

Starring Blake Lively, The Rhythm Section is about a woman seeking revenge against the people who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family. The film is scheduled to release on January 31.

Birds of Prey (2020)

Releasing this February, this DC film’s heroes are four women – Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) who have to fight an evil crime lord. Read more about the film here.

Mulan (2020)

A live-action remake of Disney’s animated classic, Mulan has Chinese-American actress Liu Yifei in the titular role of Mulan, who disguises herself as a man to serve in the Imperial Chinese Army in place of her ailing father. The film is scheduled to release in March. Read more about the film here.

Black Widow (2020)

Scarlett Johansson is finally getting her solo Black Widow film that will show us more about her past. From the trailer, it seems like Rachel Weisz and Florence Pugh will also have their fair share of action scenes. This Marvel film will be releasing in May. Read more about the film here.

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
