We all knew that Michael Bay had announced that Transformers: The Last Knight would be his departure from the franchise, but we didn’t know what to expect from the franchise yet as there was hardly any news about it. We saw the teaser trailer back in June (which rick-rolled us by unexpectedly including Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up) and now that the first official trailer has released for Bumblebee, we couldn’t be more excited.
Directed by Travis Knight – who received high praise for his debut directorial venture with the Oscar-nominated Kubo And The Two Strings in 2016 – Bumblebee is a spin-off film of the Transformers franchise. Bumblebee has always been a favorite Transformer among fans, but this will be the first time that we will see him in the eighties. From the teaser trailer, it looks like this is also the first time that someone keeps their calm after seeing a Transformer, well, transform.
Hailee Steinfeld plays the lead Charlie Watson in the film. She’s seen with a bright yellow Volkswagen Beetle, which echoes Shia LeBoeuf‘s first interactions with Bumblebee as a car in the very first Transformers film. Charlie finds the car in a bad condition in the parking lot and takes it home to be hers. When she discovers that it turns into a giant robot, she isn’t afraid at all. She realizes the gentle spirit of Bumblebee.
The new Bumblebee trailer also gives us a look at some more characters in the film. We get the first close look at Cybertron, the home planet of the Transformers. The Transformers also appear in classic designs that would be nostalgic for many Transformer fans. In the trailer, we also see that Charlie is getting the Beetle as a birthday gift from an older man, who we assume her uncle, Hank. Another new character that we see is one of Charlie’s friends riding along with her in the car, who’s being played by Jorge Lendeborg Jr. who had also played a small role in Spiderman: Homecoming. John Cena is another prominently featured actor in the trailer, and with his recent performance in the comedy Blockers, we’re looking forward to seeing him playing the military guy.
Travis Knight seems to also have taken the Transformers in a new direction. There doesn’t seem to be any world-ending crisis involving the Transformers in this one. It seems to just be a simple story about a girl and how she’s close to this machine. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be any action – there’s plenty of Transformers fighting themselves and a bunch of very menacing guys with guns, along with a new Transformer – G1 Starscream, which fans are very excited to see on the big screen. There are also rumors that at test screenings, it’s even moved some audiences to tears. Could this be the first Transformers film that makes you genuinely cry? We’ll find out soon.
