The Boom of Biopics Continues With These Upcoming Movies

Bollywood has given us an abundance of inspiring, heartwarming, and thought-provoking stories and they’re even more riveting when the characters are based on real-life people. We’ve seen history being restored on the big screen with Bollywood biopics like Mangal Pandey: The Rising and even watched the stories of path-breaking legends like in Dangal with many more on the list. The boom of biographical and historical films in Bollywood has been going strong in 2019 with hit films like Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, Super 30, and Saand Ki Aankh. There’s no stopping there because we have many more true stories waiting to be retold on the big screen. Here are some of the most-awaited Bollywood biopics:

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl

Bollywood newbie Janhvi Kapoor is all set to star in a biopic as the first female Indian Air Force pilot Gunjan Saxena. Long before IAF commissioned female fighter pilots, she ventured into a war zone along with fellow pilot Srividya Rajan to evacuate injured soldiers from Kargil in 1999. Produced by Karan Johar under Dharma Productions, this inspiring story is directed by newcomer Sharan Sharma and features Pankaj Tripathi and Angad Bedi in the cast. The film was scheduled to release in theatres on March 13 but will now premiere straight on Netflix on August 12.

One of the most awaited upcoming Bollywood biopics, this movie will unite the two biggest fandoms of India – Bollywood and cricket. With Ranveer Singh playing the role of star cricketer Kapil Dev, the movie tells us the incredible story of India’s historic 1983 Cricket World Cup victory. Directed by Kabir Khan, Pankaj Tripathi will play the manager of the team PR Man Singh along with Deepika Padukone as Romi Dev. The film stars Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Boman Irani, Sahil Khattar, and more. The current update we have is that ’83 will release in theatres during Christmas.

The late Dr. J. Jayalalitha was a legendary politician and film actress who also served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Her life story is set to hit the big screen with Kangana Ranaut filling in her shoes. The trilingual biographical film is directed by A. L. Vijay and features Arvind Swami in the role of M. G. Ramachandran. The film will simultaneously be released in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.

Sardar Udham Singh

Directed by Shoojit Sircar, this film is based on the life freedom fighter Udham Singh who will be played by Vicky Kaushal. The revolutionary freedom fighter retaliated after the brutal 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar by meticulously assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab. Singh was subsequently tried and hanged to death on July 31, 1940. We don’t have any clarity yet if this pre-COVID release date will still hold or if the film will be rescheduled.

The fearless king Prithviraj Chauhan is a notable icon in Indian history. The legendary Rajput ruled over Ajmer and Delhi in the 12th century. Taking on his role in a brand new biopic is iconic actor Akshay Kumar with Manushi Chhillar playing his wife Sanyukta, also known as Sanyogita. The film is directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and will also feature Sanjay Dutt and Sonu Sood in the cast. Produced by Yash Raj Films, it was scheduled to release on Diwali i.e. November 14, 2020, but with another Akshay-starrer Sooryavanshi releasing on the same day, this one is likely to be postponed to next year.

Directed by Amit Sharma of Badhaai Ho fame, in Maidaan, Ajay Devgn is set to play the role of Syed Abdul Rahim who is known as the architect of modern Indian football. As the coach of the Indian football team, he led them to win Gold at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta and reach the semi-finals of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. The film also marks the debut of National Award winner Keerthy Suresh in Bollywood as she plays the coach’s wife. Also starring Gajraj Rao, the film has been rescheduled to release on August 13, 2021.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar under the banner of T-Series, this biopic is based on the star badminton player Saina Nehwal. Manav Kaul has joined the cast as Nehwal’s coach Pullela Gopichand. Directed by Amole Gupte and starring Parineeti Chopra as Saina, the release date of the film is yet to be confirmed.

After Marjaavan, Sidharth Malhotra is set to star in another action-packed film. He will take on the role of real-life Indian Army officer Captain Vikram Batra in Shershaah. Captain Batra was posthumously awarded India’s highest and most prestigious award for valor, the Param Vir Chakra, for his actions during the 1999 Kargil War. The film is directed by Vishnuvardhan and written by Sandeep Srivastava. Produced by Karan Johar under Dharma Productions, the release date of the film hasn’t been announced yet.
