Here Are Some Must-Watch Bollywood Movies on Caste Discrimination

The issue of caste discrimination has been rooted deeply within our country for years and the process of undoing this evil is painstakingly slow and it still exists today. Will we see this issue eradicated in our lifetime? We don’t know. However, there is power in spreading awareness about it. This is exactly what these Bollywood movies have done over the years. Let’s take a look at some movies that have taken a bold stand in creating awareness about an issue that is constantly being swept under the rug.

Sadgati (1981)

Directed by Satyajit Ray, this film was based on a short story written by Munshi Premchand. This film makes a bold statement on the vicious caste system. In this movie, Dhuki (Om Puri) goes to the village Brahmin to get a date for his daughter’s wedding. However, in exchange for the date, the Brahmin asks Dhuki to work for him without any pay. Sadgati sheds light on how the lower caste is exploited and mistreated.

Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986)

This film starred Anil Kapoor and Amrita Singh in lead roles. Directed by Basu Chatterjee, Chameli Ki Shaadi was a satirical take on the evils of the caste system. In fact, this movie has gone on to become one of the director’s most popular works. In the movie, Anil Kapoor’s character falls in love with Chameli (Amrita Singh) but their families are against it since they are from different castes.

Aarakshan (2011)

This Prakash Jha movie deals with the policy of caste-based reservations of seats for Indian government jobs and educational institutions. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, and Deepika Padukone, Aarakshan sheds light on this all-important subject that remains relevant even almost a decade later.

Chauranga (2016)

This film is about Dalit-Brahmin relationships in an unnamed village. A 14-year old boy dreams of going to school but his reality is different – he has to look after a pig that his family owns. His only escape is to adore his crush who is the daughter of a Brahmin. This film exposes the caste system on several levels that include the overriding power of the upper caste.

Article 15 (2019)

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, this movie stars Ayushmann Khurrana as a police officer who sets out on a mission to find the truth behind a heinous caste-based crime. Article 15 exposed how the caste system is still prevalent as sends out a much-needed and hard-hitting message to its viewers. Read our review here.
