From the world of Stree comes another horror comedy, titled ‘Roohi‘. Hardik Mehta (writer/director of Kaamyaab and co-writer of Trapped and Paataal Lok) helms this Maddock production, with Janhvi Kapoor playing the lead character alongside Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma. Movies of this genre have worked well in Bollywood with Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Stree itself, Laxmii being the latest. From the looks of it, Roohi will be another mass entertainer and it is one of the first mainstream Bollywood movies to hit theatres in the post-pandemic era!
What’s Roohi About:
Set in a fictional town of North India, Roohi is a horror-comedy about two small-town boys, Bhaura (Rajkummar Rao) and Kattanni (Varun Sharma), who meet Roohi (Janhvi Kapoor). Due to some strange circumstances, they’re all stuck in an old abandoned house in the forest. Slowly, Bhaura finds himself falling in love with Roohi, but the twist in the tale happens when they realize that Roohi has a split personality, and her other personality in the same body is called Afza. If Bhaura likes Roohi, then Kattanni falls for Afza. But Roohi and Afza are the same person!
What follows is a madcap journey where Bhaura is trying to get rid of Afza and Kattanni wants to marry her. The boys fight and brawl and try to outdo each other for the love of their lives. The crazy and entertaining turn of events in this loony town leads to a concoction of madness and absurdity.
Why You Should Watch:
If you liked Rajkummar Rao in Stree, you already know that he aces in this genre. His character of Bhaura is not very different from Stree’s Vicky and he brings in the laughs with his comical act. We’re not sure why he has a lisp in this one, which seems totally unnecessary. Disabilities for comic relief is yet another trop Bollywood needs to do away with immediately. We’re glad to see Varun Sharma in yet another comic role, where he gives his best. His chemistry with Rajkummar Rao will also be one to watch out for.
However, it’s Janhvi Kapoor who has set tongues wagging here as people cannot get over her choice of diverse scripts. This will be her fourth Bollywood film, and she has already experimented with the genres of romance, horror, and drama before. Roohi/Afza is not a character written for star kids like Kapoor, generally, but she certainly seems to be going the Alia Bhatt route with her choice of offbeat roles. We cannot wait to see what she brings to the table here but from the trailer, we’re hopeful. She seems equally impressive as the coy Roohi as she is as the scary Afza. This is the perfect opportunity for the actress to flex her acting talents playing a dual character with such polarizing personalities. We cannot wait!
