Fans of the hit TV show ‘Bharat- Ek Khoj’ will remember this. Legendary actor late Om Puri had played the role of controversial historical figure Alauddin Khilji in the show, along with other roles that he played across the span of the show. But his portrayal of the tyrant was much different than that of Ranveer Singh’s version in Padmaavat.
Historians are still disputing about the facts from Khilji’s life, and none of them actually know what Khilji was like. However, most agree that Alauddin Khilji was not particularly a good person. Most of it is because of the epic poem ‘Padmavat’, written by Malik Mohammad Jayasi, some 200 years after the demise of Khilji. It’s in this poem that the mention of Padmavati is made, and the legendary sacrifice of Rajput women is referenced.
However, Om Puri’s version of the character, which appeared in episodes 25 and 26 of Bharat Ek Khoj, establish Khilji as a ruthless politician, barbaric, but also practical. He was only interested in capturing Ratan Singh’s kingdom (played by Shahid Kapoor in Padmaavat), and taking his jewels. In fact, when he is offered the proposition of taking Padmavati from Ratan Singh, he says, “I have 1600 wives. Why Padmavati?”
