It Will Take You Time To Recover After Watching These Movies With Depressing Endings

We’re used to movies with happy and heart-warming endings that make us feel good. However, these movies not only have sad endings they have endings that are really gut-wrenching and make you want to change the plotline completely. Warning: spoilers ahead!

The Mist

This film is based on Stephen King’s novella of the same name. It revolves around a small town that gets covered in a mist that holds otherwordly creatures. The ending of this film is different from King’s novella, it’s grimmer and darker. In the ending of the film, a group of survivors believe they are doomed as they travel through the mist. The group decides that death by gun is better than being torn apart by the creatures. David Drayton (Thomas Jane) takes the gun and shoots the other survivors including his son. He runs out of bullets before he can kill himself. Just then an army truck rolls by. This group was minutes away from being saved. ARRGH.

Se7en

This psychological thriller is about a series of crimes that involve the seven deadly sins. A soon to be retired cop Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and a rookie cop Miles (Brad Pitt) race against time to catch this serial killer who has already killed 5 people and now has two more to go. Things take an unexpected turn when the serial killer turns himself over to the cops and tells that that he will confess his crime and lead them to the last two bodies. Escorted by the two detectives, he leads them into the desert where a delivery truck drops off a box. When Somerset opens the box he is rattled to his core to see the head of Miles’ wife, Tracy. Soon we learn that the serial killer wants Miles to shoot him for committing the sin of envy and by shooting him Miles would have committed the sin of wrath.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

This film revolves around the horror of the Nazi holocaust camp. We meet two innocent 8-year-old boys – Bruno (Asa Butterfield) who is the son of the camp’s Nazi commandant and Shmuel (Jack Scanlon) a Jewish inmate. The two boys befriend each other when Bruno sneaks into the woods and find the barbed wire fence surrounding the camp. Bruno and Shmuel’s friendship reveal their ignorance of the camp’s true nature. Their friendship leads Bruno to go into the camp himself and he is soon mistaken for a jew and along with Shmuel is put into the gas chamber.

Avengers: End Game

This is a bittersweet film that ends with the death of Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) who saves the world by snapping his finger and destroying Thanos. It was not the kind of ending we were expecting and his funeral in the film was just very sad. If you haven’t watched any Marvel movies yet, we’re sorry to reveal the ending. But, go watch them anyway.

Gone Girl

This film revolves around a couple Nick and Amy. On their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick returns home to find his wife missing. Her disappearance receives massive press coverage. Detective Rhonda Boney suspects Nick has something to do with it as all the evidence pointed to him. However, when Amy is ‘found’ we realize that she had planned her own disappearance to teach Nick a lesson for cheating on her. Her plan involved trapping Nick in the marriage by also inseminating herself with Nick’s sperm which was stored at a fertility clinic.

Requiem for a Dream

This film dives deep into the world of addiction but also throws light on loneliness and the avoidance of reality. We meet a widow Sara Goldfarb, her son Harry who is a heroin addict, his girlfriend Marion, and their friend Tyron. Harry, Marion, and Tyron are heroin addicts and also traffic heroin to work towards their dream. Harry’s mother on the other hand receives a call that she has been invited to her favorite game show and begins a crash diet by using some addictive pills in an attempt to fit into a red dress. Soon all their lives spin out of control when Tyron is caught in a shootout and arrested despite his innocence. Harry has to use most of their money to post bail. Due to the shootout, there is a shortage of heroin supply and so the three of them begin to have major withdrawal symptoms apart from also not having money. Harry asks Merion to engage in prostitution and on the other hand, his mother begins to lose her sense of reality due to the high dosage of pills she is consuming. The movie ends with the four characters curled up into a fetal position.
