Mother’s Day Special: The Hilarious Mothers Of Bollywood

"Mere paas maa hai."

This iconic dialogue from the film Deewar holds a special place in every Bollywood fan’s heart. A simple dialogue that beautifully summarizes the treasure trove a mother is. Accept it, we won’t be anywhere without our moms. They are our ultimate source of strength and also our weakness at times. They can be nagging, annoying, fascinating, charming, adorable, childlike and sometimes even quirky.

Just like our lives, even Bollywood is incomplete without these wonderful souls.

From Nirupa Roy in Deewar to Amrita Singh in 2 States, Bollywood mothers have undergone significant changes but the underlying qualities of caring, loving and sacrificing remain the same.

Let’s take a moment out of our busy lives and remember some of the funniest yet loveable mothers Bollywood gave us.

Kiron Kher in Dostana and Om Shanti Om
From playing the quintessential Bollywood mother with loads of overacting in Om Shanti Om to being a typical Punjabi mom in Dostana who freaks out after discovering her son’s sexual orientation, she made us die with laughter.

Dimple Kapadia in Cocktail
It’s not every day that we find Dimple Kapadia playing a comic role but when she played Saif Ali Khan’s mother in Cocktail, we just couldn’t stop ourselves from adoring her loud yet cute antics.

Rakhee Gulzar in Karan Arjun
Ok, we know that Rakhee's dialogue was not supposed to be funny in the 90's when the film released. But today if you imagine the beautiful Rakhee murmuring the iconic dialogue, Mere Karan Arjun ayenge, you will burst out laughing.

Ratna Pathak in Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na
She is the modern, self-made feminist mother whose humor is not just intelligent but also very contemporary. And yes, who can forget her sophisticated comedy as Maya Sarabhai for which she has won numerous accolades.

Farida Jalal in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
If there is someone who defines cuteness, it is Farida Jalal. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai showed us her humorous side alongside the legendary comedian Johnny Lever and our very own SRK.

Zora Sehgal in Cheeni Kum
Zohra Sehgal was the unconventional grand old funny lady of Bollywood who did mother and grandmother roles with a pinch of masala to it. In Cheeni Kum, she played mother to the 60-year-old angry man Amitabh Bachchan and all we remember is her quirky, funny personality that defined her.

Amrita Singh in 2 States
You must have hated her in certain scenes but you cannot disagree with the fact that her loud-mouthed character made you roar with laughter.

No amount of words can possibly describe a mother. Here’s wishing all the lovely ladies a happy Mother’s Day. We all love you.
