Pompeii: Film Review

What can you do for love? Jump off from a cliff, fight unarmed with hundred goons or maybe, run towards an erupting volcano.

This is a season of glistening ripped abs. If it wasn’t enough in disaster of a movie “The Legend of Hercules“, Pompeii is back with its sparkling gladiator. Paul W. S. Anderson’s Pompeii is a cheesy love story. It is about a long-haired, sword-wielding, slave-turned gladiator. Time for some more gawking.

The disaster-adventure film is set in the Roman city of Pompeii. The movie stars Kit Harrington, Emily Browning, Kiefer Sutherland, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jared Harris and Carrie-Anne Moss.

The Game of Thrones star, Kit Harrington, as the Celtic gladiator, Milo,  looked perfectly sculpted with six-pack abs (or was it CG effects?). The savage brute woo lady love Cassia (Emily Browning) with his “in-born” talent of horse whispering. Emily Browning as Cassia superbly plays the role of a damsel in distress.  Amidst the belching lava of Mount Vesuvius, trouble also comes in form of blood-thirsty and lecherous future senator Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland). Now our muscled hero, Milo, must avenge his family and of course, Cassia can’t possibly marry Corvus! Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje who played the role of an aging gladiator Atticus was the only good factor, besides the glorious Mount Vesuvius.

Pompeii definitely was a complete disaster movie. With a klutzy actor like Kit Harrington as the lead actor, I can’t help but wait for the moment when Mount Vesuvius will erupt and burn down the whole city. And finally the moment came. Thanks to the spectacular CG lava. With a constant sneer on my face, I watched the city of Pompeii burn. Guilty pleasure at its max. But no, it wasn’t over. From a die-hard situation to an utterly-butterly melodrama, Pompeii ended in most cheesiest way ever possible. The final scene where Milo and Cassia strikes a pose can put Disney movies to shame.

Much like Anderson’s other recent works Resident Evil: Retribution and The Three Musketeers, Pompeii too, fails to make an impression.

Why watch the film?
Mount Vesuvius. You will shamelessly agree on that.  A digital mountain at its best. It is pure brilliance. From the magmatic eruptions to the falling ashes, it was impressive. If not the volcano, there is Jessica Lucas as Ariadne. Her ample amount of cleavage exposure might give you some relief from the potboiler.
