From Proper Patola to Disco Singh: The journey of Diljit Singh Dosanjh

Diljit Singh Dosanjh was always destined for stardom. On the eve of the release of Disco Singh, let’s take a look back at Diljit‘s journey so far.

Even when he was in school, the singer and actor exhibited an inclination towards entertainment. Formerly known as Daljit, the star was advised to change his name to Diljit. This suggestion came from none other than Rajinder Singh from Finetone, the man who gave Diljit his big break. Though his previous experience was limited to singing in a Gurudwara, he released his mixtape Ishq Da Uda Ada in 2000. The mixtape was successful, and Dosanjh churned out another record, Dil, in 2004. Following Dil‘s overwhelming success, Diljit wasted no time and got to work again. In the next six years, he released four more albums – Smile, Ishq Ho Gaya, Chocolate and The Next Level.

Though all of them were commercially successful, it wasn’t until 2010 that Diljit‘s career really took off.

In 2010, Diljit lent his track, Punjabi Munde to the film, Mel Karade Rabba, in which he also made a guest appearance. This paved the way for his entry into mainstream Punjabi cinema. 2011 marked the year of his first lead role in the film The Lion of Punjab. The movie flopped at the box office, but the track, Lak 28 Kudi Da became a big success. In fact, it peaked at Number 1 on the BBC’s Official Asian Download Chart! His second Punjabi film, Jihne Mera Dil Luteya released the same year, with the soundtrack doing almost as well as Mel Karade Rabba‘s.

However, it wasn’t until 2012 that Diljit became well-known outside Punjab. In addition to another collaboration with Honey Singh, he also contributed the track Pee Pa Pee Pa to the Bollywood film Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya. That same year, he played the lead in the Punjabi film Jatt & Juliet. In 2013, he also starred in the sequel Jatt & Juliet 2 and Saadi Love Story.

2013 was a big year for Diljit for another reason too. It was the year that the singer-actor released his smash-hit Proper Patola. The song became the biggest hit of his career. In fact, the video passed a million views just three weeks after its release! It also topped the charts on the iTunes India Chart and the Punjabi music channel, 9X Tashan.

Flash forward to 2014, Diljit is everywhere. With Disco Singh all set to release this week, Diljit is making waves everywhere. In fact, Diljit and Disco Singh have generated hype across the country. Additionally, Diljit is also set to expand his horizons with his upcoming film, Punjab 1984.

With the hype surrounding him and his upcoming projects, it’s no surprise that Diljit is quickly becoming a household name. If he keeps this pace up, he might just become more famous than we can comprehend.
