Tamil cinema over the years has given its audience a fantastic mix of masala, action, and meaningful storylines that have been remembered down the years. Here are some films that hit the jackpot in terms of popularity

1. Mookuthi Amman

This entertaining comedy directed by R J Balaji features Nayanthara in the role of a goddess for the first time who helps a family in tackling various social issues and evils prevelant in the society. Its funny,relevant and a must watch

2. Ka Pae Ranasingam

A poor village woman runs pillar to post to and faces all kinds of red tapism and corruption to get her dead husband’s body back from the Middle East for his final rites. With powerful performances by Vijay Sethupathy and Aishwarya Rajesh, Ka Pae Ranasingam is a hard-hitting octal drama that should not be missed.

3. Soorarai Pottru

Based on the life of Air Deccan founder Captain Gopinath, Soorarai Pottru stars Suriya as a modest entrepreneur who dreams of bringing affordability in flying to the common man by owning his own low budget airline.It is an inspiring true story that hits all the right notes.

4. Asuran

From the dream due of Dhanush and Vetrimaaran comes Asuran, a penetrative and disturbing action drama of a seemingly timid father who braves extreme danger to protect his son and family. This is a beautifully shot film that won many awards and critical acclaim as well as great commercial success too.

5. Kaithi

Lokesh Kanakaraj’s intense chase drama Kaithi starring Karthi features the actor playing the role of an ex-convict who is caught in the middle of a deadly encounter between the police and drug lords. Fast-paced and frenetic, Kathi makes for excellent viewing and did fantastically in the box office.

6. Super Deluxe

Super Deluxe directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja is an interesting assemblage of 4 stories that are woven together by a common thread. The performance of the film comes from Vijay Sethupathy who stunningly portrays the transgender Shilpa and the difficulties faced by the community.

7. Vada Chennai

A proficient carrom player sets foot in the world of crime and joins forces with local gangsters to settle their feuds. However, he decides to take them down when they plan to wipe out his locality. One of the biggest blockbusters of the year, Vada Chennai is again a masterpiece from Vetrimaaran and Dhanush.

8. Pariyerum Perumal

This film is a disturbing social drama about an idealistic youth who is optimistic about his future as he enters college. But a tragic chain of events, and his friendship with a girl from a different caste, will wake him up to the harsher realities of caste-stratified life in India. Directed by Mari Selvaraj, Pariyerum Perumal was one of the critically acclaimed films of the year and is a definite watch.

9. 96

Two childhood sweethearts played by Vijay Sethupathy and Trisha meet after many years at their school reunion and start to reminisce about their lost romantic memories. A mature and beautifully written love story, 96 is a quintessential Valentine’s Day film.

10. Aruvi

Aruvi deals with a middle-class girl, who is thrown out of her house after her family accuses her of having brought shame on them. Later, as she tries to survive on her own, she must overcome several challenges. A stunning debut from Aditi Balan took this film to great heights commercially and critically

11. Maanagaram

Lokesh Kanakaraj’s debut film Maanagaram connects different characters in a city seamlessly. When a young man is threatened by a few men, he ends up fighting with them and getting on their bad side. Things take a turn when they set out to seek revenge from him. A film shot in hyperlink format, Maanagaram put Kanakaraj on the map of directors to watch out for.

12. Mersal

Starring Thalapathy Vijay Mersal deals with Maaran, a doctor, who is falsely arrested for the murder of his colleague, Dr Arjun Zachariah. He soon discovers that the real culprit is a lookalike who aims to expose corruption in the medical industry. This is a typical Vijay entertainer that exploded at the box office.

13. Kabali

Starring superstar Rajnikanth , Kabali deals with an ex gangster who is released from jail and proceeds to seek revenge on his arch rival who was responsible for his captivity. There’s tons of action and superstar style in Kabali that makes it a film to watch definitely.

14. Kaaka Muttai

This is a sleeper hit about 2 slum kids who make it their mission to earn enough money to eat a slice of Pizza. Kaaka Muttai was the offbeat blockbuster of the year and was widely appreciated by critics and audiences alike for the superb performances of both child artists.

15. O Kadhal Kanmani

Starring Nitya Menen and Dulquer Salmaan, this Manirathnam film deals with the lives of a young live-in couple and their various issues through the eyes of a dedicated older couple. O Kadhal Kanmani is a master class in relationships with Manirathnam in his element.
