What do you get when you take a Marvel comic and make it into a Disney film? You get a whole new experience of awesome. Welcome to the world of San Fransokyo. A world filled with robots, next gen tech, light and brilliance. This is the world of Hiro Hamada and Baymax. Directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, Big Hero 6 makes you smile from start to finish. It just goes to show that Disney can make an action-comedy animated feature that blows everything else right out of the water. Big Hero 6 is a movie for everyone and you will leave the theatre wanting more of these ‘Marvel’lous characters.
A lot can go wrong when a powerhouse like Disney steps into the world of action. We could have songs in the middle of fights. A rather silly hero, a stodgy villain and a simpering heroine among other things. But Big Hero 6 has none of that. You get a whole new speed. It’s almost as if they’ve finally found their action heroes. The movie revolves around two primary characters – Hiro Hamada and Baymax. One is a genius in robotics and the other is a robotic personal health care assistant (nurse). It is a story about reaching for the stars and realising that the sky is not the limit. You are engaged right from the start. As the movie starts, you are immersed into a glorious world of light and dark, the colors of which leap off the screen. Set in the fictional city of San Fransokyo, we are taken into a world of the near-future, where the tech has evolved and along with that we have a megacity. Hiro has the potential to save the world, but lacks direction. Baymax is his brother Tadashi’s creation. A soft marshmallow-y, cute and caring robot and a kid together? Can they do the impossible and rise up? With the help of four friends – Go Go Tomago, Honey Lemon, Wasabi and Fred, Hiro and Baymax do just that. Now the city is under threat from a supervillain whose identity is a mystery. The only obstacles in his way are these 6 heroes. With an inventive mind and a whole lotta spirit, we have the world’s next gen heroes.
The film is an epic ride from start to finish. It gives you a taste of the future, without ever overwhelming you with the details. The story itself shines through. Starring the vocal talents of Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, T.J. Miller, Jaime Chung, James Cromwell, Alan Tudyk, Genesis Rodriguez and Maya Rudolph with Damon Wayans Jr.; Big Hero 6 makes its presence known. Disney has outdone itself with this film. You are no longer rooting for a simple storyline. There are twists and turns, there are character backgrounds to explore, there are more stories to be told. This film takes a Marvel comic and makes it so much bigger. Admittedly, it doesn’t fit in the current Marvel cinematic universe, but it was made to stand out. There is a passion that was imparted to this film, and you get to see it exude right out of the movie. The dialogues and banter make each character fun to observe. The special effects are present, of course, but they do not detract from the movie. As for the soundtrack, once again, it is a treat to the senses. Fall Out Boy’s Immortals will make you feel like a hero. Trust me, you will get goosebumps more than once. Oh, before I forget, don’t be late for the movie. You will want to watch the short film Feast at the start. Feel your heart swell when you watch this movie.
Why should you watch this film?
Big Hero 6 makes animated action movies fun for the whole family. You can watch this from start to finish and go back to watching it all over again, just to find out that it has gotten better upon second watch. Disney has delivered big time. However, it has now been done without playing to the crowd. That is the best part of the movie, a story that is amazing, visuals that are stupendous, humor that will leave you giggling, and excitement that will make you whoop. Do not miss this movie. Big Hero 6 is just what the doctor ordered.
