The Choice: Film Review – An Attempt to Re-Create Romance

Verdict: Nothing you haven’t seen before.

Nicholas Sparks‘ stories, as seen and read in the past, follow a peculiar pattern. The fairy tale romance, the break up-patch up phase, marriage, disease, accident, death and miracle. Everything you can expect from Sparks is what you are likely to find in The Choice, which continues in the fine tradition.

Based on the 2007 novel, the movie is a 109-minute long love story set in Wilmington, North Carolina. It  revolves around two characters Travis (Benjamin Walker), a charming country boy and a vet by profession, and Gabby (Teresa Palmer), a medical student from a rich family, living in adjacent houses. While Travis is busy being a ladies’ man, enjoying life, partying with his on-and-off girlfriend Monica (Alexandra Daddario), Gabby is more serious and plans on settling down with her long-term boyfriend Ryan (Tom Welling), who seems to be the perfect match for her. Gabby’s free-spirited nature and obliviousness towards Travis’s flirting gets Travis all the more attracted towards her. They both love dogs and as her boyfriend is out of town, Travis and Gabby start hanging out together more often, which obviously leads to them falling in love.

And then the unexpected happens. Ryan, instead of breaking up with Gabby, asks for her hand in marriage. But of course, a Sparks movie, cannot come with such a minor tragedy. An almost fatal accident leaves Gabby in a critical condition fighting for her life (which we glimpse right in the start of the movie). This makes Travis do crazy things to make her come back to him.

Besides the main characters, the lead’s sister and father also play a vital part in sharing Travis’s past, and his mom’s death with Gabby. Although, not all the vital points are given enough importance. At the end of the movie, the audience may not have all their questions answered. What happens to Gabby’s promising medical career? How does Travis afford such an expensive house by the lake when he’s a small-time doctor in his dad’s clinic? You’ll never know.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

A little unrealistic in its category, this movie may be predictable, but it will not bore you. You’ll enjoy director Ross Katz‘s choice of locations, and the subtle music in the background which enhances the theme of the story.

6 Years of Piku: 5 Unknown facts about the Deepika Padukone, Irrfan Khan, Amitabh Bachchan starrer

1. Did you know that the original choice for the title role was not Deepika Padukone? It was Parineeti Chopra. Shoojit went to Parineeti to play the Big B’s beleaguered daughter in Piku. But PC Jr argued she was already doing a father-daughter film Daawat-e-Ishq. Director Shoojir Sircar shrugged and rang Deepika’s doorbell. As luck would have it, Daawat-e-Ishq bombed. Piku was a cult success. Daane-daane pe likha hota hai khane wale ka naam. Same goes for roles.

Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali reinitiate talks for Izhaar; Shah Rukh to play a man who cycles to Norway for love

Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali created magic on screen almost two decades ago with Devdas. But ever since, they have never worked together in a film. But sources say they were very close to reuniting on screen on several films. SLB had offered SRK both Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat but talks fell through. In fact, there were also rumours that the director wanted to cast Salman Khan and Shah Rukh together in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam 2. That also never materialised. Then, there was the Sahir Ludhianvi biopic that SLB was producing. So there have been a few misses for the actor-director duo.

BREAKING: Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai makers voluntarily make 21 cuts and modifications after getting censor certificate

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had always been seen as a spoilsport. Many viewers have cried foul since years over CBFC’s idea of chopping off ‘objectionable’ scenes and thereby compromising on the freedom of expression of the makers. This perception of CBFC got a boost under the chairmanship of Pahlaj Nihalani. Though he vacated the post in 2017, the perception remains.
