Divergent: Film Review

Based on a popular book series, Divergent is a story set in a dystopic world sometime in the future when society is divided into factions, and as teenagers, you choose which faction would you like to belong to. It is a choice you make for the rest of your lives and it is as good as patriotism, only that it is towards your faction, which may also give you the feeling of a competition and you have to stick to to your teams, come hell or high water. On the outside, however, it is an amalgamation of Twilight and The Hunger Games which might meet Harry Potter at a certain point as well.

So Tris (Shailene Woodley) is a divergent, which means she can never belong to any one faction, but this is a truth that she must hide from everyone, lest she should be killed. On the other hand, is the lead antagonist, played by Kate Winslet, who for quite an inexplicable reason is trying to get her faction to rule above all, by either killing or enslaving the other factions. The use of technology seemed like an intelligent option here as the army she has ready is possessed, but by the use of potions and not charms or magic.

There are a few places where you will find yourself questioning everything that goes on in the movie, including the odd ‘jumping from train’ sequences. While you expect your faction to follow suit, you must explain why a certain thing is happening to them. Imagine travelling by train with a group of friends or peers, and for no explained reason, everyone starts performing a daunting task like jumping off a moving train, or down a deep dark hole not knowing whether there’s a safety net on the other end or not. Then, to spice it all up, there’s a romantic angle that has to inevitably make its way into the film, ’cause what’s life without romance, anyway. The avid followers of the book series maybe unhappy with most of my statements, but the fate of the movie is regardless of what the film turns out to be. And that, my friends, is the story that will make you sob. And then, sob some more. Please watch only if the books have appealed to you at some point, but with little expectations.
