Gone Girl: Film Review – Swift. Dark. Exceptional.

What are you thinking? What are you feeling? What have we done to each other? What will we do?

Love. Marriage. Adultery. What is it that makes us who we are? Perhaps, some things are better left unanswered.

Based on Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel, Gone Girl, David Fincher’s thriller is both engrossing and provoking. It delivers what it promises. Crisp suspense, a flawless script and terrific performances.

The film opens in a suburban neighborhood of Missouri on the morning of a young couple – Nick and Amy Dunne’s – fifth anniversary. But, the seemingly quiet morning turns out to be a shock for Nick Dunne when he discovers that his wife Amy is missing. What happened to her? As the investigation gets underway, secrets are revealed. The flawless facade of a perfect marriage unravels.

Ben Affleck plays the character of Nick Dunne. He gives a strong performance. As the film progresses, Nick Dunne’s character evolves. You will hate him, blame him and empathize with him. Rosamund Pike as Amy Dunne is simply stunning. Call her femme fatale, maybe. No one knows what’s on her mind and what she will do next. Amy is the center of attraction, and Rosamund Pike does justice to the role. She is calm. She is wild. She is bewitching! The rest of the cast also does an impressive job. Special mentions for Neil Pattrick Harris as the suave Desi Collings and Tyler Perry as the high-street attorney Tanner Bolt. They both carry out their role with utter finesse.

There is not a single dull moment in the film. Accompanied by the brilliant cinematography of Jeff Cronenweth and the haunting background score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, David Fincher has once again given us a perfect thriller. Flynn’s well-crafted script will keep you on the edge. The sense of uncertainty will engulf you. Perhaps, the most twisted love story ever. Hold on, is it a love story or a revenge saga? Questions will arise. But there are no answers. There is no absolute truth.

Why should you watch the film?

It might sound a tad cheesy, but how can you miss a David Fincher film? Do we seriously need a reason here? Based on the global bestseller by Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl is the perfect thriller you are craving for. Watch it for Rosamund Pike’s impeccable performance. Enough said.
