Inside Out: Film Review – Marking Pixar’s return to form

Sadness is a blessing, sadness is a pearl

If we ever needed help understanding these words, we don’t anymore. Inside Out, the latest addition to Pixar’s catalogue, is a poignant and profound film that explores every human emotion and its importance in our lives.
Joy. Sadness. Fear. Disgust. Anger.
These are the very emotions that shape us. But what makes them what they are? Inside Out tries to answer that very question by showing us what goes on inside the head of an 11-year-old girl named Riley. When her family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco, Riley’s life is no longer as joyous as it used to be. From hockey tryouts to not being able to spend time with her father, it seems as if the joy has been sucked out of Riley’s life… And when we look inside her head, it quite literally has!
The real fun takes place inside Riley’s head. When Joy and Sadness find themselves pushed to the back of her mind (long-term memory), they must find their way back to "Headquarters", which is easier said than done. Add to this the fact that Fear, Disgust and Anger dominate Riley’s mind in the interim, and you have a whole lot of chaos!
Inside Out is the perfect film to help Pixar bounce back from Cars 2 and Monsters University. In fact, it might just be their best since 2009’s Up. Though its animation style may not be for everyone, Inside Out has so much more to offer than just that.
The film is a stunning look at what makes us who we are. Not just our disposition, but our personality as a whole. As Joy and Sadness try to navigate to the headquarters, they stumble upon various aspects of Riley’s personality. These include (but are not limited to) memories, dreams, abstract thoughts and imagination. They are all depicted with brilliance and simplicity, that’ll make you smile. In fact, various aspects of the human psyche are brought to life with a wit and a charm that is rarely seen in films anymore. Right from the Islands of Personality to the Stuffed Animal Hall of Fame, Inside Out might just be one of the most insightful animated films ever made.
Needless to say, Inside Out is also a visual delight. It would have been easy for the animation to be dull or lacklustre, seeing as how the film largely takes place inside Riley’s head. However, it will surprise you with its exemplary depiction of the most mundane things like a brain freeze and Riley’s imaginary boyfriend!
Though Inside Out isn’t Pixar’s finest film to date, it is certainly a step up from what we’ve seen in recent years. It dares to do something different and does it well. The magnificent concept is occasionally bogged down by some parts of the execution that are less than perfect. However, these flaws are easy to ignore in an otherwise amazing film.
Why should you watch this film?
Inside Out is the perfect film to enjoy with your family. It has something that can appeal to both children and adults. Stunning animation, coupled with an innovative plot, makes this film a must-watch for everyone.
