Insurgent: Film Review – Flat, lifeless and ill-defined

Dull, lifeless and poorly defined, Insurgent will definitely leave you in a cloud of despair. Based on the second book in the best-selling Divergent series, the film, lacks the required punch and finesse, and is also slow-paced. The story starts off from where the first part ended. FYI – You’ll HAVE to watch the first part of the film, if you have to make sense of this one (At your own peril, though). The first half of the film kick starts on a promising note with high-octane train sequences. But then, the excitement just drops!  And what follows later is an avalanche of vague and boring melodrama, which will leave you confused. The second half, however, brings back the losing elements with visually appealing effects, picturesque views and action-packed sequences.

Set in the post-apocalyptic time in Chicago, Tris (Shailene Woodley) finds herself helpless (no surprise there) against the powerful and evil Erudite leader Jeanine (Kate Winslet). With her faction-mates and her significant other, Four (Theo James), standing tall by her side; it’s eventually all upto Tris to save the city. Will she or will she not? That’s for you to find out.

Directed by Robert Schwentke, the film features a stellar cast. And if there is anything the novel fanatics should look forward to, it is Shailene Woodley. The actress reprises the role of Tris effortlessly. Though her character is very similar to that of Katniss, it loses grip as the movie progresses. Kate Winslet‘s role as Jeanine is remarkably stunning. Though Miles Teller (of Whiplash fame) has a small role, he’s outstanding. Theo James as Four is another actor to lookout for other than Shailene, as he makes his presence felt.

Overall, the film may be a let down for the fans and followers. But since it concludes on an open-ended note, it obviously means more sequels to come!

Why you should watch this film?

If you are a huge fan of the series or Shailene Woodley, then you should probably catch this sci-fi thriller over the weekend. Otherwise its advisable to re-read the second book again.
