Kingsman: The Secret Service: Film Review – Saving the world while looking dapper!

British spies in bespoke suits face a villainous megalomaniac! Sounds like a Bond film? But Kingsman: The Secret Service is anything but. Sure, it tips its hat to the spy genre of the 60s but the movie has fun with it. Director Matthew Vaughn has delivered a brilliantly fun, doesn’t-take-itself-seriously, and riotous movie. With a star cast of heavy-weights such as Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Samuel L. Jackson, Jack Davenport, Mark Strong and Mark Hamill and newcomers such as Taron Egerton and Sophie Cookson; this movie takes you to the edge of your seat and keeps you there.
With guns, gadgets, killers, explosions and even a bunker, Kingsman: The Secret Service truly reminds you that “Manners Maketh Man.”

As the movie opens, you are introduced to this super-secret organization who operate at the highest level of discretion and secrecy. What do they do? They save the world. That’s it. No mucking about. Colin Firth plays Galahad, a knight of the Kingsmen. He is tasked with finding a new recruit for the organization, and this is where Taron Egerton comes in as Eggsy – a diamond in the rough. Push forward to training and Eggsy is pushed to the limit. All the while, in the background, we have Samuel L. Jackson who plays mega-billionaire Valentine who is out being sneakily evil. Does Eggsy have what it takes to be a Kingsman and stop the evil machinations of Valentine? While still being a gentleman?

Kingsman: The Secret Service is a movie about spies and that makes things difficult. Any spy movie gets compared to the Bond franchise. But here, Vaughn has gone the other direction. With gratitious violence and tongue-in-cheek humor, Kingsman  is a treat to watch. Colin Firth is amazing as the spy who has saved the world so many times, his walls are covered with headlines from newspapers. Mark Strong is sublime as Merlin, the crochety and super-intelligent trainer/ agent. And let’s take a look at Samuel L. Jackson shall we? He is off the wall fun with his lisp and twisted mind. With Valentine, we get a villain that makes the good vs. evil fight believable. Taron Egerton is wonderful to watch. The transformation from a ‘chav’ to a ‘gent’ is quite a change. Vaughn has got all these amazing characters to play around with and he does so with reckless abandon. The film is kept tight, with awesome fight scenes and cool gadgets. Combine that with a soundtrack that just tied it all together, Kingsman: The Secret Service rocked!

Why should you watch this movie?
Kingsman: The Secret Service delivers knockout blows and finally we have an action film without the existential drama that most of them seem to exude. Taron and Colin Firth are a wonderful team. One is the young disciple who needs training and the other, the master-spy. Kingsman: The Secret Service is a glorious collection of everything good about spy films and none of the political correctness. In the end, you will walk out of the theatre feeling like a gentleman spy. How awesome is that?
