Looper: Movie Review

Review: In a movie that stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, the audience expects an “Oh my Nolan” or a “Die Hard” moment. Fortunately this movie does deliver on most fronts.

A Looper is an assassin that kills people sent from the future. Yes, its a movie that involves time-travelling, some nice guns, a lot of drugs and super-powers of sorts (Tele-Kinetics).

Its like a super concoction of a a lot of science fiction. The story is about Joe, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, a Looper who does his job well and is quite the junkie. Everything is fine until he has to kill his future self (The future Joe is played by Bruce Willis) and things start falling apart (much like the falling apart audiences had when a certain Bella fell in love with a sparkling vampire). In the movie, this is called “Closing the Loop”. This is probably 10% of the whole story and if I’d try explaining more, all of us would probably end up with a massive migraine.

If you delve into the movie, you will see multiple facades of human nature. Violence, drugs, guns and naked women yes, but, the portrayal of greed, love, lust, anger and power was like poetry in motion. The whole idea of the past and the future fighting against each other is brilliant. Put yourself in Joe’s position and you shall definitely experience a wide range of emotions passing in a fleeting second. Looper is not really an outright, fast-paced, boom boom bang bang movie. The movie is quite medium-paced and becomes a tad bit slower in the second half. But that’s probably one aspect of the movie the audience will enjoy. The way the events churn out is very similar to the feeling of warm dark chocolate melting in your mouth. You need to savor this movie to really enjoy it.

If you actually think about the movie, when its over, it leaves a sinking feeling, and ironically, you may end up with a wry smile. There will be certain events in the movie that will make you go “What the….” but later when you think about it, every little doubt and ridicule in your head will settle. The movie runs on a single time-line of sorts and gets predictable, but that doesn’t really hamper the charm if the movie.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays an outstanding role (One cant help notice the make up he’s applied to make him look as close to Bruce Willis as possible. Make-up that will probably make a girl gasp with glory and embarrassment). Bruce Willis was no less. Amazingly executed dialogue delivery with a pinch of quirkiness made him the ideal “future Joe” and as usual he was the bad-ass of the movie taking out mini-armies like a 5 year old child eating a Snickers bar.

The soundtrack was well set and the direction was exhilarating. Take a bow Rian Johnson.

Verdict: For the love of Sci-fi cinema DO NOT leave your brains at home. Worth a watch!
