The Magnificent Seven: Film Review – A Magnificent Remake

Verdict: The impressive cast makes this western action flick worth the remake.

The Magnificent Seven is a remake of a remake – it is a remake of the 1960-film of the same name, which in turn was a remake of the 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai. Thankfully, like the previous films, this one is worth it too. It is directed by Antoine Fuqua (best known for directing Training Day and Shooter) and written by Nic Pizzolato (acclaimed writer of HBO series True Detective) and Richard Wenk.

Set in the 1870s, the plot is straightforward. The town of Rose Creek is in danger, under the siege of corrupt mining industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard). Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett), now a widow after her husband was mercilessly shot dead by Bogue's men, seeks justice/revenge. She then approaches a renowned officer/hunter who assembles the "Magnificent Seven", preparing themselves and the town's residents to fight against Bogue's men.

The Magnificent Seven comprises Denzel Washington as Sam Chisolm (bounty hunter, leader of TM7), Chris Pratt as Josh Faraday (gambler with a fondness for explosives), Ethan Hawke as Goodnight Robicheaux (sharpshooter), Vincent D'Onofrio as Jack Horne (tracker), Byung-hun Lee as Billy Rocks (knife assassin), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Vasquez (Mexican outlaw) and Martin Sensmeier as Red Harvest (Comanche warrior). It could be called an ensemble cast and is certainly impressive, since there is diversity amongst the characters they play.

The soundtrack is on point, thanks to James Horner, the same man who gave us the eternal Titanic soundtrack. A few elements of the OST, although perfectly fitting to the film, are slightly reminiscent of Titanic, only because it is Horner's signature style. May he rest in peace, as he passed away while composing it. His friend Simon Franglen completed it, doing justice to the theme.

The film has all the crucial elements that make up a western action film – guns, horses, cowboys, saloons, the desert, an old school county and of course, a Mexican standoff. Most western action films require a lot of sharp dialogue, coupled with even wittier humor. This film has a sufficient amount of both.

Seven Samurai besides the remakes has been paid tributes in many a movie – Hollywood and Bollywood. And almost every one of them has been appreciated saying a lot for the original story that remains evergreen. The Magnificent Seven is yet another addition to the list and sure does the job well.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
Watch The Magnificent Seven for the entertaining cast and the performances, which make this western action flick a slick one.
