2011’s The Muppets was a story that brought the Muppets back together. Of course, it was also a story about bringing the Muppets back together. The movie garnered critical acclaim and won awards, while also doing well at the Box Office. It is, therefore, no surprise that Muppets Most Wanted sticks to the tried-and-tested formula.
Muppets Most Wanted picks up where The Muppets left off. In fact, it begins with an upbeat number “We’re Doing a Sequel” that takes place just after their Hollywood performance. High on success, the Muppets are still unsure what comes next for them. This is when Dominic Badguy (Ricky Gervais) enters the picture. Dominic, who claims to be a talent manager, convinces The Muppets to embark on a world tour.
We also meet Constantine, who is a dead ringer for Kermit the Frog, except for one tiny detail – a mole. With some help from Badguy, Constantine gets Kermit thrown in a Russian gulag and takes his place with the other Muppets. The two then execute jewel heists, while using The Muppet Show as their cover.
Like its predecessor, Muppets Most Wanted is full of meta jokes that poke fun at itself. In the opening number “We’re Doing a Sequel”, the Muppets sing about how sequels are never as good as the original! A number of stars, including – but not limited to – Lady Gaga, Christoph Waltz, Tom Hiddleston and Chloe Grace Moretz – also make cameo appearances. What’s worth noting is that the film also declares that sequels rely on cheap tricks like one-line cameos!
However, all jokes apart, Muppets Most Wanted does not need any of these cheap tricks. This Disney movie has a plot just as solid as The Muppets. Where its predecessor was a wonderful way to bring the Muppets back into mainstream consciousness, Muppets Most Wanted is more laid-back. Now that they’re back together, this sequel gives them a chance to go wild.
It is, therefore, no surprise that the movie is a laugh riot. Though the previous movie had its moments too, the jokes and gags feel much more evenly distributed in Muppets Most Wanted. It’s also better than The Muppets because it gives the Muppets much more screen time. Though Amy Adams and Jason Segel were a delight to watch, the movie was called The Muppets for a reason.
All things considered, Muppets Most Wanted has something for everyone. Looking for an homage to The Shawshank Redemption? Or would a duet between Celine Dion and Miss Piggy interest you? Or do you just want to see Christoph Waltz dancing the waltz? Look no further.
The only thing keeping Muppets Most Wanted from being truly amazing is the multiple plotlines. While they’re all well-executed, they take away screen time from actors like Tina Fey and Ty Burrell. The actors’ fake accents tend to border on cringeworthy, but in a way that’s still entertaining. The soundtrack, which is good, also pales in comparison to that of its predecessor. However, these flaws are easy to ignore in an otherwise wonderful movie.
Though Muppets Most Wanted claims that sequels are never very good, they might’ve just proved themselves wrong.
Why should you watch this film?
Primarily targeted towards kids, Muppets Most Wanted efficiently combines mature themes with lovely animation. This makes it a fun and entertaining movie for everyone to watch. If you liked 2011’s The Muppets, you are bound to enjoy the sequel too.
