Paddington 2: Film Review – The Cuddly Bear Is Back

Verdict: An adorable sequel that will make you hungry for a Marmalade sandwich.

Move over toys and emojis, the cuddly bear is back in town. There are very few movies where kids and adults can both have a great time and Paddington in 2014 was one of them. Obviously, because it was a huge success, it was only a matter of time before this Peruvian bear made a comeback on our screens. Paddington returns with the Browns and most of the old characters of Windsor Gardens and embarks on another adorable adventure. Paddington 2 is sugar, spice, and everything nice all rolled into a Marmalade sandwich and a perfect treat for the weekend.

What's Paddington 2 About:

The Marmalade-obsessed bear Paddington (Voiced by Ben Whishaw) is settling well with the Browns and is on a hunt to find the perfect gift for his Aunt Lucy's (voiced by Imelda Staunton) 100th Birthday. He is your friendly neighborhood bear who on his way out offers breakfast to a cyclist, helps the garbage picker study and reminds the odd person about his keys. He finds the perfect gift in the form of a pop-up book at Mr. Gruber's (Jim Broadbent) Antique Store and decides to get a job so he could buy it. But someone else in the form of Mr. Phoenix Buchanan (Hugh Grant) also has his eyes on the book and decides to steal it, framing Paddington. It is up to the Browns now to clear his name.

What Works:

The movie doesn't take itself too seriously and that is amazing because it leaves room for all that British humor we are so fond of. You know you are in for a sweet movie that will have a lot of laughs and moments that will make you go 'aww'. Hugh Grant certainly steals the show as he plays a failed actor who does dog food commercials. He is villainous and at the same time makes you laugh…a lot. Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, and Peter Capaldi make a fantastic return with the series. Ben Whishaw adds charm to the bear with his gentle polite voice as he tries to follow all of Aunt Lucy's teachings.
But with all CGI-live action movies, most of the credit lies with the CGI team who have done a fantastic job with the bear as he navigates through the streets of London. A particular scene that stands out is the one where Paddington and Mrs. Lucy are a part of the pop-up book and were navigating through the famous landmarks of London.

What could have been better:

Absolutely nothing.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

There wouldn't be a better way to start your year. The movie fills you up with optimism and fills you up hope that all the bad things will go away. With some spectacular performances and a set that screams the best British have to offer, you are really in for a Marmalade-cious weekend. Just remember,"If you're kind and polite, everything will come right." Also, you will have some fun if you stay while the credits roll.
